I can only hope...did they not pick up on the 'Lord' bit ? I haven't heard of a female director, it's part of the reason I want to be one so much. I don't see why guys should get all the fun of directing.

^ yeah, i don't know why that is, but we also produced the greatest film director of all time (hitchock) and the greatest playwrite of all time (shakespeare); and we have the best theatre scene in the world (the RSC and the west end are second to none). it seems we are just all round fantastic! i guess it's because our natural eccentricity lends itself rather nicely to theatricals.

Americans have.......well, we have.....ummm.....*sits down and grabs paper and pencil* [s]well we succesfully started a useless war[/s]....hmmm, no that wont do....we umm...we have McDonalds! No....that doesnt do much for my argument.....we well....umm....Hollywood!

not so. some of the greatest and most popular movies of all time are in fact british - the ealing comedies, the powell and pressbuger films (including the red shoes - sometimes cited as the greatest film ever made), the third man, brief encounter, 2001: a space odyssey (often the highest-rated sci-fi film), the monty python films, the james bond films, kes, withnail and i, trainspotting, the harry potter films, the full monty, the richard curtis fims, billy elliot, calendar girls...i could go on. obviously i'm not saying we're always the best (we did also produce the hideousness that is the carry on series, for goodness' sake) but we have made some pretty amazing films in our time.

and in all fairness, there are some pretty amazing films made outside the US and the UK as well - amelie and downfall are both fantastic, to begin with.

@ Ms.G: Ah yea, but you guys have some ace accents. Like the Miami accent, and the Texan accent and the Montanan accent, so many other fabulous ones. And you do have excellent actresses/actors and Hollywood which is like the big movie place.

What's wrong with the 'Carry on' films? 8) Absolute classics! ...

Ok, you're right, they were atrocious, but they were funny because of it.

And I have to agree, the Brits have done some great films. Some of the best. And I claim the Lord of the Rings is English. After all, it was invented by an englishman!

(yes, I know. typical english arrogance. Have to lay claim to everything... 8) )

Looking at that list, we have some awesome actors to troop the British colours...glad to see Christian Bale on there I'm not saying it's completely true, but I think Britain has films with more depth...and of course, the wonderful British sense of humour

^ Aye. The sense of humour gets us through most of the time.

In truth I've never been a big fan of American made movies. There are the occassional really good ones that I'll buy on DVD and watch over and over again. [Yes... PotC is on that list. Sue me.] However, I find myself watching more foreign films [besides American] that are usually wonderfully made. The Colour of Paradise [Iran], The Eighth Day [France], and The Road Home [China] are just a few examples.

I've heard a lot about Pan's Labyrinth lately, a Spanish film, I really want to see it...the director is incredible, apparently.

As for British sense of humour, I must give up there, watching old re-runs of Fawlty Towers yesterday has clearly made me give up on the fact that English wit is the best there is.
Though I must say (I was also watching re-runs of MASH yesterday) not all american TV shows are bad...or even all american movies....ok,well...now they all suck. But they weren't too bad 40 years ago.

Sorry to interrupt in your evening tea.. but I've got a question for you Brits.
I heard today that British people are really funny and appreciate value a good sense of humour and I.. forgive me for my ignorance... but I've always been under the impression that.. *twitch* well, English people didn't have much sense of humour... you know the prejudice about the stiff upper lip and stuff. But now I was told that being funny is actually what gets you somewhere in England. That's what people appreciate and the worst thing you could be called is... boring...
