That's one of the stereotypes Americans have for British people. :p

I heard today that British people are really funny and appreciate value a good sense of humour and I.. forgive me for my ignorance... but I've always been under the impression that.. *twitch* well, English people didn't have much sense of humour... you know the prejudice about the stiff upper lip and stuff. But now I was told that being funny is actually what gets you somewhere in England. That's what people appreciate and the worst thing you could be called is... boring...

Has anyone noticed, that our dear Eä loves to ask these complex/confusing/deep questions? :P

I don't know about our sense of humor, I know lots of people who have a fabulous sense of humor. My sense of humor, well, hmm, I have one, not sure what category it comes under though. :lost: But I wouldn't say the English don't have a good sense of humour.

we may have a rather peculiar sense of humour but it is most definitely still there.

i would say most british comedy is either sarcasm, slapstick or satire. i think other nationalaties often don't find our comedy funny because it can be quite dark, almost cruel; it often involves rather uncomfortable situations that make you squirm; it is often related to people and current events that may not be known outside of britain; and it plays off the stereotypes we have, that non-brits may not understand. i think the most distinctive thing about the british sense of humour is our willingness to laugh at ourselves.

i would say the stiff upper lip does still go to a certain extent though - for example, crying in public isn't really the done thing.

That's what I love about British humour.
It's humour not meant for stupid people. You've got to know wit and stuff to be able to understand it...most americans are just so...dumb...(dont kill me) :p

Don't worry, Ms.Gamgee, I won't. In fact, I agree with you for that statement.
Just don't kill me when I say this: I haven't been exposed to too much British humour. Can someone guide me to the right path of the exposition? I saw something from Monty Python about the fruit military thing or something like that. That was a bit funny.

Umm Estë... now you frighten me... I'm on foreign field and I try to thread carefully, hehe...
I didn't mean that the British don't have a sense of humour, every country has it's own sense of humour, but I didn't know it played an important role, as I was told today!!

Thanks for the elaboration eowyn. So let's see.. the English humour I know would be.. Mr. Bean (slap stick), Blackadder (very black humour), Smack the pony (sarcastic, self irony?). I think I like your sense of humour... may I immigrate? lol.
And concerning crying in public. When Princess Diana died people were crying in the streets. I think they talked about finally having a valid reason for being able to show their emotions...

I see what you're saying Mrs. Gamgee... and perhaps that was why Estë took me for being American, lol :P

EDIT: Owh yeah Monty Python of course!! *slaps forehead* Thanks Caunion!

Monty Python has to be the best comedy to have come from Britain ever. I saw the Holy Grail, and the Life Of Brian last summer, and I found it hilarious. I mean come on, the killer bunny rabbit scene is the epitome of funny

I do not know where you heard that we Brits don't have much of a sense of humour. We do have the 'Stiff Upper Lip' as it is called, but only in times of trouble. Take the July bombings for example. (Not a pleasant one I know) the terrorists were looking to disrupt us. But the very next day, everyone was using the tube anyway. That is why others think we have stiff upper lips, and why when we can, we love having a laugh :D

And I have also heard that lots of other nationalities don't appreciate our humour, as a lot of it involves irony. (And - shoot me - but I've heard the americans can't understand that...)

Ok, that was probably completely irrelevant, but I got to be patriotic, so I don't care :P (Up the Red, White, and Blue! 8) )

I think us britons like balance most of ht etime. We are usuallly the first to laugh at a joke if its funny and we appreciate good humour whne it is needed or wanted. but also when somehting is inherently stupid beyond all recognition or in bad taste, generall its stared down. Also all this Lark about stiff upper lip is all to do qith asense of "britishness" and to a lesser extent, " Englishness." Its hard to explain, but I have tried my best so there :-P
P.s. thanks for saying we r funny. I love compliments :-P

Oh, I finally got a chance to watch some British comedy. No idea what it was except hilarious. It was something about Captain Peacock and they spent their bonus on the horses and the jockey they put their money on fell of the horse.
I just looked it up. It was "Are You Being Served?" Does that ring a bell?

Fawlty Towers rocks. That is/was a good show, though I've only seen it on a couple of tapes that my friends have.
