Books first. I grew up with parents who were fans of the books and my older sister read them all pretty early. My mom would read "The Hobbit" to us as a bedtime story. I read LotR in my teens and then saw the movies when they came out in theater.

For me it was a bit of both in fact.. I have seen the Fellowship first, than I have read the whole trilogy, and after that I watched the Two Towers and the Return of the King.. so I can't say I did one before another

I saw the EE of the movies first. i haven't seen the other ones. i read the books afterwards. i love both of them so much!

Hmm I did both at the same time.. kinda.. First I watched FotR and TTT, then I read the books and then I watched RotK.

My friend insisted I read the books before I see the movies (this was after all 3 EEs were out) and I probably wouldv'e done that anyway. It's just what I do, usually - read the book(s) a movie is based on before seeing the movie, I mean.
