Interesting conversation...
Well, let me give my poor opinion on this, but keep in mind I'm only representing ... my lonely self!
First of all, I rarely venture into the contest section... sadly, I'm not a graphics maker and therefore I don't enter contests (makes sense so far, aye?). I go here when I have some extra time or want to see something new, and then I browse through the threads... mostly the voting threads because they have all the entries in the first post, so I don't have to trawl through a whole thread to see peoples' wonderful work. I vote when I feel like it and give comments if I feel like it, and I hardly ever read through other peoples' votes, especially not before I vote...occasionally afterwards to see what people think of the entries (but I found they almost never agree with me anyways - do I have a bad taste?).
So.. basically I don't feel so much at 'home' in the contest section, and therefore I don't feel the same obligation to vote as others who spend more time here might do. I think I've only voted via PM once or twice...
*goes silent*
Err... I actually had a grand point to sum it all up and to suggest something for future contests, but it slipped when I was editting typos.. *curses*
So I guess that's it so far...

[nods] Thanks for your input Ea --- and I know where you're coming from, I generally don't vote in subjects I'm not familiar with like poetry and song-writing contest because I don't really have a basis to judge on but I have voted for a poetry contest once or twice because the hosts of that contest asked me to.
I was comparing-contrasting between the Samwise Quote Banner Contest voting and this conteset voting and the voters were more than doubled in the Samwise contest than here ---- now this can either be because of pm or because they have to think about deeper meanings in the entries. I'm not sure but either way --- the voting was more popular with the one that simply asked for people to vote.
I just simply think that's wrong.
When you go to vote for your state governor or your prime minister, you have to think about how he can improve on certain points, what he can do for your people, is he a good man, etc --- there are things you have to think about when you vote and I don't understand why that's not applied to here.

I don't think it's tp do with the entries Kit - you've had trouble in the past SC contests when all you had to do was pick your favourite and vote.
And your right ----- it is wrong.

Thanks JF...
Well, actually it wasn't meant as a contribution to the ongoing debate, but more of a personal view.. because I know I'm not 'the regular voter'.
But beware, here is actually a comment to the discussion:
For me the PM thing would scare me away. I have such a lousy memory so I always have to go back to look at the entries several times (which is also the reason why I sometimes refrain from voting if the voting thread is going on page two, shame on me...). I know I could open a new thread to write the PM but.. *whispers* I don't get to do it.... please don't hurt me...
EDIT: Don't post a reply before I'm finished with mine!! [insert smiley that hits other smiley with rotten herring]
I was also thinking about something else. How do people judge the entries? Sometimes I look at the contest title and get an impression to what the entries are supposed to be like, and then I click the thread and see the entries and they are something else. I mean am I supposed to vote according to how people meet the requirements for the contest (which I usually don't know because I didn't see the thread where the contest was started). And if it's a quote contest, I'm inclined to vote for the quote I like the most. Sometimes I actually think whether I should actually consider these things, but then I figure I should not... and don't! *ahem* That was confusing...
Concerning the vote for president... well, you don't have to make up your mind for a presidential candidate several times a week. There are so many contests here, so I believe people wouldn't put so much thought and effort of commenting and considering every time. They might do it once in a while, when they find a contest particular interesting!

Your welcome Ea.
Well if the voting is going onto page 2, I use the quick reply and that means I can vote and then just scoot up the same page to see the entries. I have to quote Kit though.....
