"I do not intend to die," broke in Gwyria, having been previously silent, one eyebrow raised in an expression of dismissive skepticism. "If your mindset is forever so pessimistic, it may well be a suicide mission."

She was carelessly blunt, and looked undaunted both at Aedhon and his mountainous bodyguard, who dwarfed her so completely that his head seemed miles upwards. The diminutive Kor'daera tossed her red-brown braid, tendrils of curly hair escaping from it, over her shoulder and regarded Garex in particular. This required a step backwards, to find the head atop his shoulders. "I suppose your concern is viable, however," Gwyria added on second thought. Couldn't hurt.

Feyl managed to keep his expression from changing. Barely. People who thought they were going to their deaths could prove very difficult to help or be helped by.

"It is not meant to be a suicide mission--other Laude, Bekaran, and Humans will be attacking the forces that the Gohl have possessed, so as I said, we should have only small opposition ourselves, unless we have awful luck. You were picked because you are all skilled warriors, so you should not die. On the other hand, we cannot let you live if you become possessed--so it could become a suicide mission if you let it."

For him, it most likely was a suicide mission, though--he was chosen because he had the bare minimum of power to open or close an Archway--he had only enough strength to do it once, and the process would most likely kill him. Still, it was a way of ensuring that he would not be able to wreak more havoc on Adaris should he be possessed by a Gohl and used to open the Archway. There wasn't any need to let the other members of this quest know, though.

"You should all survive this mission, yes," Feyl said, stating it as a fact.

Marvilan remained uncomforted by this new line of news. He then asked, "Have you found a way to repel this Gohls when they possess us?"

That was another difficulty.

"No, we have not," Feyl said, wishing fervently that they had. "No one who has been possessed by one has escaped their clutches or been captured by us, so we have no idea what exactly occurs. At this point, the only remedy is to kill the person."

It would hardly be considered a remedy by many, but Feyl had no doubt that if he was ever possessed by something, death would come as a blessed relief--the idea of him doing ill against his friends was beyond bearing.

It did, however, give him motivation to succeed in this quest. If he didn't, his friends would die or be possessed, and if he was aware of his actions, he wasn't sure if he would be able to handle that stress.

"Thankfully, we have reason to believe that only one Gohl can pass through the Archway every few hours, since it is not fully open. We wouldn't be able to pass it at all, but the creatures seem to have some trick that we do not."

So technically, Gwyria almost said, it could end up being a murder mission but not exactly a suicide one. She knew, however, from experience, that this sort of interjection was not well received in the majority of circumstances. So she said nothing, only grinned briefly and impishly.

(ok thanks!)

Karina sniffed slightly. She was basically walking into her death. She bit her lip and continued to listen.
"Isn't there another way? To get around the Gohl?"

"Funny you should ask that," Marvilan said. "Apparently you haven't been fully updated. Several weeks ago we managed to capture a Gohl possessed Bekaran by injecting a paralysing agent into him. After three days of analysing his brain, we found the source of the possession. It's more like a virus than anything. Several months before all of this, we discovered the source of our identity. Our "I" if you will. It's located in the brain where it transmit personal information about the identity such as behavior and personality. What we discovered in the possessed Bekaran is that the Gohl clogs the veins, arteries, and ducts to and from that source of identity, sufficiently blocking it from the rest of the brain. Then it rules over the brain in the identity's absence. We managed to free the Bekaran's brain from it by destroying the clogs, which allowed the identity to take over, but sadly he committed suicide two days after his operation from the shock of his actions. Nevertheless we have found a way to repel the Gohl. But it does require expert surgical robots and nanobots, which we can't transport with us. The best that I can do is inject you the paralysing agent and transport you to a surgical center. Not unless you magicians there can perform neuromicrosurgery."

Eshtok tried to keep a blank stare off his face as Marvilan talked. The man's explanation didn't make much sense to the Laude. He did understand that there was a way to repel the Gohl. That was all he needed to know.

"And you've tested this method?" Xaviera asked. "Do you actually know that it works?"

The Laude stared blankly. She didn't understand what he said, other than they had found a way to get rid of the Gohl posessing you. She also understood surgery was apart of it. The couldn't bring along robots to perform the surgery? What if something went wrong on the way to the hospital?

"Well it is a bit difficult to obtain more subjects," Marvilan said. "Especially since the current "remedy" is to kill them. Aside from that Bekaran, we haven't done the surgery to anyone else. But we are certain of the location of the source of identity. We found it in the exact same place in Laudes, humans, Bekarans, and Kor'daera. So undoubtedly the nanobots would know where to go."

"They might know where," Xaviera said, "But does that mean that they will?"

Marvilan turned his inhuman eyes to Xaviera and said, "Of course they will. They follow the paths that the source uses to transmit information. Would you like a demonstration? I can easily sent for a technician, a team of nanobots, and a monitor and we can insert them inside your brain and have them to find the source and project it on the monitor."
