Nightingale-I can't wait to read more of that story, it really got me intrigued.

FM- I don't why it made me laugh, but it did (not in a bad way, I really liked it). I also want to read more of the story.

That's good, it was supposed to be a humorous story. :P

Aw, thanks! I love my Nathan (hehehe... I'm always falling head over heels in love with my characters), and I had so much fun writing that part, even though it took me ages to find him.

FM, I loved it and chuckled every other paragraph. You have a gift with playing with words but still making the story flow... even I was confused at the very end but still thorougly enjoyed it :P

My friend and I need help with our book series. We need to know how to build our villains without making them crazily evil. What traits do you like in a villain?

Cultured. I much prefer a villain who still has some class to him (Col. Tavington, Barbossa, Emperor Palpatine, Count Dracula, etc). Somehow that makes it all the better when they're suddenly holding a knife to someone's throat or executing a prisoner. There's something to be said for calmly sipping wine and ordering the destruction of an entire race. :teehee:

aaahhh, yes. potr, I love the way you think. :vampire: Calculating and intimidating are a few others. Minions serve out of terror - and of course, he considers them expendable. Some tangible incarnation of his power would help as well - something besides the dark citadel, we've all seen that one. Perhaps he should look and act ordinary in public - after all, an interesting villian is the last person you would point a finger at.

But, among all the things listed above, someone who doesn't need a reason for being evil. That character is evil simply because of a disdain for all things. I love that.

I agree that classy, terrifying, not-reason, villains are great, but they aren't the best in my opinion.

I prefer betrayers. The very people who should be the good guys gone bad. That's what makes a absolute villain if ya ask me.

And what's better than terrified minions? Minions who think that they're doing right because they are following the villain, who they don't know has betrayed the good guys.

^
Those ideas just send chills up my spine!

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I prefer a villian who has every right to be angry and evil. It makes more sence why they are evil. Also, if its done right, the reader may find themselves understanding the villian and feel a thread of compassion, while at the same time still think they are evil.

See, I prefer not having the betrayer, because that always happens to myt fave character, if it doesn't happen before the novel begins, or the justified villian, because then they can't be cool and collected and still have you feel as sorry for them.

Another type of villian I lke though, is the antagonist who isn't really evil you know, just slowing the protagonist. Like they're not intentionally evil, but they aren't exactly good. Does that make sense?

^yeah, that does make sense.

My "villians" are usually pretty evil, though there's always something confusing or mysterious about them - where they came from, why they're evil, etc...

Good, I'm glad someone got what I was trying to say, I didn't know quite how to put it.
