I just wanted to know.... is there anyone else out there who doesn't like PotC? Because I feel alone, and like the world is possessed. I personally don't think it was a good movie, and, well, wanted to share my reasons for disliking it with someone else who won't attack me with Whatshisface-Pirate-Guy action figures.

Well to not like something is great. Having opinions is what makes the world go round along with chocolate fudge cake. Not respecting other people's opinions makes the world halt...like looking into M.E's eyes...and I think you'll find most people here on AU will respect your opinions (I don't have any action figures by the way).

So please, explain why you dislike POTC. I spent too long on the LOTR IMDB forums, listening to people say "I hate LOTR!!" and not giving any reasons other than "everyone else likes it so I'm gonna hate it!".....sad but true. So I am a perfectly rational Pirates fan - I love the films but I don't go over-baord - and I'll listen to all you say, and I won't but any figures for the [s]bash-fest[/s] event. ;)

Whew. I'm glad to know i'm not the only one!

Ok, at first I did like PotC. Until I watched it 2.4 billion times. Then it just got irritating and boring.

Fast forward to DMC. For one thing, it was way too long. I probably would have liked it better if the theater I was in wasn't so freezing cold.
But the real reason I didn't really like it was because it was too drawn out, the plot was unbelievable, and that stupid monster ate Johnny.

I will stop now. I don't mind that everyone else loves it; in fact that's great. I love movies that you guys would probably find dumb. So it all evens out in the end

Well, I didn't see the first movie for a long time after everybody else had seen it. I thought it was the usual stupid comedy stuff that I don't like at all. But when I finally did, I liked it. Very much. So much that I can't wait for AWE.

Still - to me, PotC is not a movie with so much depth and that certain kind of beauty that other ones have. *tries not to mention a certain film called Lord of the-- cough*

Well if were talking about Pirates from a techincal viewpoint, then no, it is not going to win awards for amazing acheivement in films It doesn't have the same kind of scenery, special affects, story or script that could compare with films like Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Lord of the Rings etc, but for sheer entertainment value, Pirates is way up on the list.

So just because a film isn't the most brillaint technically on the planet, it doesn't mean a film can't have entertainment value. Look at Van Helsing and National Treasure - the stories are all over the place but they are fun films, so who cares?

And I think it makes a change with Pirates, to have entertaining films that aren't stupid American comedies, that all the family can watch and enjoy together.

[gets off soapbox]

Why I hate POTC? I mean, dislike. It doesnt interest me. Now, if it was a fantasy story like Narnia, LOTR, etc, then yes--that interests me. But Pirates sailing across the Sea...not really. I know what someone will say "But its more than that." but I dunno. POTC just...doesnt seem that great. I dont really wanna bother watching it.

I've been thinking about this all day, and I must say it's a mix between the characters and the actors.

Jack Sparrow: A sparrow is a bird. He's always drunk and can't decided whether he's going to be funny or not... and even when he tries to be funny, he isn't. I like Johnny Depp, but he's terrible in PotC.

Elizabeth Swann: Hmm, I sense a bird theme.... She's gross, drippy, and in my opinion a Mary-Sue. And Keira Knightley can't act.

Will Turner: He screams BORING a thousand times over. I can't really comment on him because he doesn't DO anything.

I could go on about the little characters who made it bad [freakypsychicladyinDMC...]but I won't. You get the picture.

I also thought that the monsters were pathetic looking. The "Kraken" looked like rubber. Can't imagine why. And Davvy Jones... looked like a pile of worms. That might have been the point, but a good villian is likeable... and he sure wasn't likeable.

Er...likeable? I don't think a good villain has to be likeable. Do you like Sauron? *blinks*
Maybe that's not what you meant. :P

Normally I like a lot of the villians. Sauron was neat. Grima was nice. Durza was spectacular. The White Witch is...likeable enough for me.

I guess sometimes it depends how the villian is portrayed..

Okay, so maybe not likeable as in they'd be a friend, but as in, they're so evil that you have to like them because they're clever, or hot :P, or something like that.

And Davvy Jones wasn't either one of those...

Hmm...can you hate something though that you've never even seen? I mean most people will stand back and say "sorry I don't really want to watch this film because it jusn't interest me" and this is a justifiable reason for not wanting to watch something. But hating a film you have never seen, possibly because everyone else round you loves it, isn't really the best thing in the world to do. It's great to have opinions and to share them, but you have to be careful not to fall into the pit of hating something without just cause, I know because it's happened to me. If you don't want to watch Pirates, then that is your choice and your right. Personally I think you are missing out on something great...but that is just my opinion. ;)

And err…Captiain Typhoo from Star Wars is a brand of tea? Not quite sure where you’re going with the “bird” observations, but I’ve seen some characters with the worst names imaginable and my god, how I love those characters. And he is a pirate and pirates do drink rum…and I don’t think it has anything to with him deciding to be funny…it’s whether the situation calls for a smart comment or not.

Gross? That’s a new one.

Well to be honest Legolas screams boring a thousand times…hmm..actually Orlando Bloom screams boring a thousand times. I lurk on here 9 hours a day with Bloom-lovers and I just smile. :D

Well technically the Kraken is some kind of relation to the giant squid whose skin is of a rubbery texture When rubber gets wet, it goes all shiny, so I actually think that because the design team studied octopi and squids, it made the Kraken look very realistic.

Yes….I think tentacles are what they look like myself (but that might just be me). Well Hitler is one of the greatest villains of all, but I wouldn’t be cheering for him in a film. There are lots of villains out there who you have to hate – you can’t like them and aren’t meant to like them. Davy Jones is a likeable villain just because of how awesome he looks and the whole presences about him.
