Welcome back!

Well... long story... I wrote...
Firstly I wrote, where the Greek, especially Homer and Hesiod, got the idea from to write the Ilias, Odysee and Theogonia. Well, it's difficult to explain in english, because I'm not sure if all those names we have in german or greek are the same in english, but I'll just try :P
They took many ideas from ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, but also from the lands of today's Turkey, because the ancient inhabitants of Greece came from Turkey. One of these ideas for example is how they treated the dead, put a coin onto the eyes or beneath the tongue so the dead could pay for the journey into the Hades. In Mesopotamia people also put coins beneath the tongues of the dead, out of the same reason.
Well, and the second part of my essay was about the biographies of Homer and Hesiod, and where those two got the ideas for their scripts from. Homer for example didn't invent the stories about Troy, he just wrote down the stories some singers sang about a huge war that took place around 1200 before Christ. Hesiod took some even more ancient scripts about the mythological history of the world and took some parts of every one of those, changed these stories only minimal and just put in different names.
And in the last part I wrote about the most important myths, so... About the 12 highest gods and godesses, then about mythological creatures and smaller heros, and then about the Argonauts, Troy, Odysseus, and so on...

well, this it would be in the short short short short form what I've really written in my essay... not sure I wrote it really good so you all can understand it, please ask if you have any questions! :P

Oh that sounds neat! :D

The part about the coins is interesting. I've never heard of that before.

You haven't heard that? Well, the souls have to pass the river Styx before they get into the Hades, and there's a sailor, have forgotten his name right now, something like Chairon I think, and he has a small boat where he gets the souls from one shore to the other, and he only lets them in if they give him one coin. THat's why. :)

not under the eyes
Under the tongue, or on top of the eyes... you see that in the Troy movie, they put the coins onto the closed eyes before the bodies are burned.

Wow, I haven't noticed that no one posted in this club since early April!
Oh well, still I have to announce in here as well: I'm leaving, not forever, but for a longer period of time. If anyone wants to take over this club, I don't mind, well... if anyone is that interested in greek mythology that is...

Good bye to you all, see you soon hopefully.
:bye2:

Erana

Wow... Hello...
This club completely died out!
And I so much would love to see it alive again, as I'm so into Greek Mythology!
Won't anyone help me keeping it from dying?
And... sorry for the double posting... again and again and again and again and again...

Alright, maybe it helps the club staying alive if I move on to the next topic?

Why is it that you are so interested in Greek Mythology?

For myself I have to say that at the beginning I simply loved all these ancient heroe stories, while I was searching for my most favourite hero (for me that is Hector, even without having in mind that Eric Bana played him), and of course my most favourite female in these myths. I couldn't hear enough about these stories, read I don't know how many books. But while I grew up with this mythology, I came to realise how historically and psychologically fascinating it is, and I realised the depth of all these stories, and how they influenced the every day life in greece, and was taken over by the Romans far later on.
This mythology doesn't simply exist out of stories, but people believed that they were true, they worshipped these gods and goddesses, their whole culture centered around it. That is what then caught my interest even more, so that in the end I even wrote a large essay about this worshipping.
It's a culture where you can dig deeper and deeper, somehow similar to Tolkien, where you first read LotR, then come to realise that you can get to know more and more about this world, and you just keep reading, unable to put the book out of your hands.

I've always been interested in gods and goddesses from all different pantheons, the Greek gods being one. So I chose to do Classical Civilisation at college and I love it. :D I suppose it isn't just the Mythology but the entire Greek way of life and their literature. Even so, I LOVED the Odyssey... which is good seeing as I had to do an exam on it (90 out of a 100! YAY!)
I also love how the gods tie in with everything in the Greek world, even in the comedy plays.. :D

So yeah, that's kinda why I'm interested in Greek mythology specifically but I'm fascinated by pretty much all mythology. I also like how even though the different cultures are spread across the world so many characteristics of their gods are similar...

I love [Greek] mythology because of the stories- the romance, the intrigue, the cleverness, and the practicality of them. And of course I love the gods/goddesses!

Wonderful, more members! I'll add you two to the list instantly.

And really, Legolas, you want to become a history teacher? Well, perhaps there's indeed a link from history to mythology. I'm currently studying history for becoming a teacher as well, I'm in my second year now on university.
