That's the smell of tea, Ms.G. The smell of coffee is similar only a bit milder.

I dont care If I dont drink tea, IM still a true englishamn without drinking tea. I support English Rugby, Football, know all th everses to swing low and various football chants, Love english breakfasts n trifle, Despise Blair with a passion and find Jacques Chirac a purely Ghastly person. And all other Pre- requisites of englishness.
But I dont drink t tea and i dont care for disapproving glares either .
( rant over)

Hey! The aroma of coffee is good! I go into perfume stores just to smell the cups of coffee beans Oooh, I love coffee. And tea. But sometimes I feel more like coffee than tea, and vice versa.

No one said you weren't English, mate.
By the way, since EBM brought up the subject of football, what are your teams there and what are the tournaments? I feel so deprived here.

Well personally supporting English sports does not to me, prove you are a true Englander................
Especially football. It's time people stopped hero-worshipping "English" football players and actually give the title of "hero" to far more deserving and under-paid people.
Football is a disease, wants it takes hold of a person there is no going back - even the most mild-mannered person can be turned into a pathetic yob where football is concerned.

^this is true, but I wish to say that I do not become a yob when football is concerned. that's too much effort but I'm not an avid supporter, and I've never been to a game. (And besides, the team I support plays in Italy, so if I watched a game over here, I wouldn't care what the result was )
But in essence what you say is true, though not nearly as badly as it once was...

that's not exactly fair. i'm not an avid football fan, but i do watch all the england matches that are shown on terrestrial tv and i kind of follow aston villa (birmingham's my nearest big city, and villa are my nearest decent team), and i have absolutely no hooliganish qualities whatsoever. i've been to two football matches now (villa vs derby in the premiership a few years ago and leeds vs blues in the championship a few months ago) and there weren't any problems at either, despite the leeds and birmingham fans having some of the worst reputations - sure some people were a bit coarse, but not violent. furthermore, i know plenty of people (my dad and his friends, for example) who have been football fans for years and not one of them is a "pathetic yob". you really shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush.
i do agree with your point about hero-worship though. it is ridiculous and, quite frankly, sickening.
and while we're on football, it looks like the team from my home town will be relegated from conference north at the end of the season. how humiliating!

No, I wasn't referring to everyone who watched/supported football turning into a yob - but the sad truth is that it seems, that football does seem to cause more violent clashes and wild behaviour than say rugby or cricket, 2 other sports that are also very popular. And it is perfectly true, that no matter what time of person you are, ANYONE can just go plain weird where football is concerned - the amound of bank managers, vicars even who have been caught in football fights, people you would never expect to cause trouble, is amazing.
Obviously people can enjoy the sport without all the fighting etc....but living in a family with 2 male football fans is very tough.....you mention Liverpool to either my brother or Dad and the utter childish abuse they pour on Liverpool FC is absolutely pathetic......and the same goes for a lot of rival football clubs I'm sure.....and when teams lose they walk round as if they are about to be executed.....I'm just really fed up of having to be careful what I say on a Saturday in case my dad's in a really bad mood because Everton lost.
I'm sorry if my comments offended people or seemed harsh - but quite frankly I have had enough of football and the majority of people who support it and degrade the image of the sport - a sport which was originally to entertain people, now seems to revolve round money and causes more problems than I believe a sport should.

Im sorry to hear you say that. I do agree that english footballers are hero worshipped too much. I also agree that players over here are paid stupid amounts of money for th erelative amount of work they do. However, I do think that football has a bad rep for hooligansim. More so than rugby or cricket as you say. Football is a unifying sport in many cases. There in th estands, the working man who eanrs a wage doing hard work an dthen we have th ericher echelons in society who are in th esame position, Football, like most sports helps to bind society toeether and make a person feel like they are part of something. But to get up here and roundly abuse th esport that is watched and loved by the best part of th enation and alot of the world, just because of a few people who go around kicking each others heads in is not right. I do agree that football need sot go back to basics and becometh esport it once was. Ive been Man u fan for about 10 years and tho I watch Rugby amd love rugby, I make sure thats I keep up to date with Man U's progress.Ive seen a brawl or two at rugby grounds in my time, and let me tell u now, that is NOT pleasant. When it kicks off ata rugby ground, its vicious. But as u sed it doesnt often. I think that football about 50 years ago was a good thing, bacause it wasnt amulti milliomn industry
but to categorise al fans and tar the game with taht kinda brush is to put it lightly really putting the knife in there JF.

I had to make my feelings known, throw my cards into the centre. Some of my ideas and experiences disagreed but also many agreed. IM not persecuting u JF or being petty but just saying what I feel in my heart I must say. rather like you in fact.

i agree wholeheartedly. my grandad was a professional footballer about 50 years ago, and he still had to work as a carpenter because the football didn't pay enough. back then it was about the game, not money.

This is somewhat presumptuous mate, that u assume I am not calm. All i was doing was expressing an opinion, which when last I looked, was the main purpose of this board. I can do this without being a raging pitbull can I not?
but notwithstanding misunderstandings I think we should crack on with another subject matter. Like what is the thing you love most about Britain?
