Except my first pieces were so terrible I can't bare to even look at them.

I'm sorry, but, what happened was they were on my old computer, which, to sum up, died. What I would do is go to the "Resources" Section and there are threads there for textures and brushes.

I won't necessarily say that. I, personally, perfer borders, but I have seen many that look great without them. The added touch that borders give is the "defined area". It basically tells the person that this is your graphic, not what's outside. So, they will, typically, judge the graphic with what is inside rather than comparing it to the outside.
