This is for the movie only:

1. Samwise (Sean Astin)
A very likable character and I think Sean did a top notch job acting like the friendly gardener and great companion.
2. Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen)
Gandalf is probably my favourite character in the books and I think Sir Ian played him very very well. To bad he didn't get that FOTR Oscar.
3. Gollum (Andy Sirkis)
Andys performance lifted the character IMO. He gave an evil tormented being a lot of character. I'm very ipmressed with Andy.
4. Bilbo (Ian Holm)
He portrayed an aging Bilbo very well and I think he did a good job in both the movies he was in.
5. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen)
Strong performance in a key role in the story, but he should've been slightly more like in the book.

But IMO evry actor and actress in the movies will get two thumbs up.

My favourite Charakters are Gandalf (Olórin) and Aragorn.

Gandalf is someone who trys to help the people with good pieces of advice and he also give them hope to deal with the dark times or the darkness.

Aragorn is a perfect leader. It seems that he wants to provoke the power of the men to stand and fight against the enemy.
Viggo Mortensen act that character fantastic and you can image that he's realy Aragorn himself.

Legolas, Gandalf, Arwen, Aragorn and Eomer are my favorites.
