I suppose if our culture didn't cram the idea of guys and girls getting into relationships all the time, we might be a bit more eager to make friends...

I always thought of my situation as a kind of universal thing, but I guess not...
Me and almost all of my friends have it the same: if you talk to a guy, it's shown as giving him attention which equals flirting. A girl can't just start talking to a guy because one, 95% of the guys at my school only talk to girls in the flirtacious kind of way, and two, you'd recieve looks from the people around you. And pretty soon, they'd ask what was going on between the two of you.
I do have a couple of guys at school that I joke around with, but that's it. I find it highly impossible to find a guy at my high school that I could talk to just like any other girl, let alone one that was mature enough.
It's quite tragic, really. That's what I love about college: being with my sister last week has shown me how guys can really mature. My sister had both a choir concert and a play during the weekend we were there. 3 guys came both nights to see her, and even hugged and congratulated her afterwards. But it was all cool, they're just friends. Somehow that kind of thing just can't happen at high school.

^I understand what you feel. Guys think that when girls walk up to them to talk, its flirtasious. However, apparently everytime a guy talks to a girl, its the same thing. Funny Huh!

Amen Sister!
I have the problem with people looking at me funny, too. I'll just be talking to Tyler, Parker, or Judson, (who are like BROTHERS to me!), and all of a sudden someone will be like, "Do you go out?" or, my favorite, , "You two make a great couple!"

As you said, it is the difference between the cultures. In my culture, you can make with opposite gender as friend because when people do like each other, they confess each other.
Gwen sorry to hear that you have to till the college I guess. It is a matter of being mature sometimes actually people need of a true friend more than a boyfriend or girlfriend like I do have 3 or 4 girlfriends whom I am really close to. I think my culture is high context

I like what you said about high school Gwen as it's completely true.
Guys seem to mature a lot slower than girls do and it seems that in high school many of them just aren't ready to just be friends with a girl. I know many guys like that who are deathly afraid of becoming too close to a girl for fear that it'll look as though they could be "together".
However I'm convinced that as we mature and our friends around us mature we'll all be able to make friends [or more] with the opposite gender much easier. And the bit about your sister Gwen, proves that point.

But then the whole point of dissappointment friends start to play in the picture. Have you ever had friends who disappointed you so much that you questioned your friendship with them. In my high school class (137), about 3/4 of the class drinks alcohol illegally.

Wow Tel.. for some reason that's quite depressing. Especially if your friends are part of that 3/4.
I don't ever recall being in any situation where I was so disappointed I actually questioned being friends with a person, but I'm sure it's happened to me before. I do know for sure that I have questioned a few of my friendships for other reasons though. It's not a pleasant feeling.

I agree with a lot of the things Gwen has said. It's easier to be friends with girls simply because they're safer. They usually aren't jerks, and even if you're simply friends, you start thinking things randomly, and they might start thinking things, even if neither of you want to go there, and other people will talk about it, to the point where you just give up because it's too uncomfortable.
As for guys being more mature in college...that's sort of my only hope. It's also the reason for my current plan - nooo dating til college. Before then, it just seems sort of pointless - all about the drama. *shrugs* Hey, I'm not saying guys in high school can't be great. But as a rule...I'd rather wait.

^^^My best is included in that, i have questioned my continuation of friendship with him. He doesnt want to lose me as a friend, but when he does stupid things like that, it makes me so angry. im not sure why i am. Is it wrong that i hate his desisions? Is it also wrong that i want to know everything going on in his life, what he does?

It isn't wrong at all to hate his decisions if they upset you. But I wouldn't end the friendship. You seem to have your head on your shoulders, and I don't think anyone couldn't bennifit from your influence.

@ Tel: You have no control over his exact actions, but you can influence them. If he's making bad decisions, try steering him on straighter path. Stop things before they happen. But, ultimately, if you feel like you can't associate with him because of what he does then maybe your friendship just isn't meant to continue.
As for dating.. I'm all for dating right before you go to college just so you gain some experience before going out on your own. Once your on your own, there's no going back.
