Jack twirled on the heel of his boot and rested against the railing. "Reason is a matter of perspective."

Knowing that wasn't enough to keep the motley crew from asking more questions, Jack sighed and continued, "I am simply lending a hand in destroyin' the East India Trading Company, which ye aren't doin' a very well job at, gents..." Jack paused, "Also, I don't have the patience for ten years." he added in a low grumble.

William, being the moral gentleman that he was, insisted on Jack, "It does not matter if you have the patience for it or not, Jack. You must deliver the souls to the other side. Do you want to end up like Jones?" With this question, he wiggled his fingers near his chin, in an attempt to imitate tentacles.

Mr. Cotton turned his head to show disgust as his parrot said,

"Shiver me timbers!"

Ignoring Will, Tia moved closer to Jack. "We all owe ye our lives, no doubt," she assented, lightly tracing the lines of his jaw with her fingertips. "An' p'raps now you can regain de favor of Calypso by seein' to de souls you jus' sought to destroy, hmm? You have a duty to dem, Jack...'less ye wish ta end up like Jones, as William said."

Beckett met her last comment with dignified silence as he began to stroll around the room. "I seem to recall a certain governor's daughter breaking into my private office, on one occasion, and threatening me at gunpoint in order to obtain that which she desired. I fail to see how this differs from anything of which you are accusing me," he finally replied, pausing to examine a small trinket from his desk. He smirked, seeming almost amused by the whole conversation. "But forgive me, I've been a dreadful host. Please, take a seat," he said, indicating the very chair that Elizabeth had been eyeing. "Can I send for anything? Tea? Wine? Perhaps something to eat? Prison could not have been a pleasant experience for one of your condition."

The old mate, Joshamee Gibbs, felt the need to slap Cotton's parrot upside the head, "Shutup already or ye'll bring down th' sky all together upon us, and it upon us! Let 'em speak!"

"Thank you Mister Gibbs." Jack piped in and looked good and hard at the bird he always considered 'iffy'.

Not that the bird was the only cause of this annoyance but now Tia was adding to that. Despite her smooth hands, dark skinned, tattooed lips, and sensual attitude as she traced Jack's jaw, he hated the word 'duty'. It didn't seem right, he who has a duty, is definately not a free man.

With a wave of his hand to knock her's away Jack said, "End up like Jones. End up like Jones. . ." He repeated in a mocking way. "Right then, off to me duties." Jack added in a fit of pique.

Swaggering himself away from the odd crew, Jack stepped into the mast, and disappeared off the Black Pearl.

Captain Jack Sparrow now found himself standing amongst nothing but a devastated mess of wood and fire, and looking upon naught, but a few survivors.

Watching as Jack disappeared into the mast, Will's eyes then shifted toward the Dutchman, but after searching, he did not find Jack aboard. However, in the near distance was the barely floating vessel that had tried to attack them and Will spotted movements aboard it.

Running to the ledge, he leaned over and gazed as best he could, into the blur of smoke that billowed from the ship. He looked to Tia and then asked, "What does Jack's duty follow from here?"

For a moment Elizabeth's common sense grappled with her pride. The one pointed out that she hadn't eaten in quite some time judging by the hollow feel of her stomach, and the other adamantly refused to accept anything from a man she considered so detestable. A few seconds of this and, expression tightening, Elizabeth sat with a look that dared him to comment. Common sense only carried her so far, however. "My condition requires no more than what I would receive without it," she said by way of a refusal. "Nor does it render me unintelligent, milord Beckett." The title was less a title than a jibe. "Why am I here?"

She had several shrewd guesses, and some of them very educated ones, but to think of it as Beckett likely did...far different. Elizabeth found herself calculating possible escapes from this less than ideal situation and dismissing them all coolly in her subconscious. 'Her condition' was rather more restrictive than she would have liked to admit.

Mr. Cotton looked flabbergasted at Mr.Gibbs but the parrot had other ideas.

Indeed, he did, shut up. But this certain parrot had other ways of revenge.

He flew up high and looked down, for this was no dumb parrot, having to deal with pirates his entire life and learning to speak like one. The parrot raised his tail and prepared to drop the bomb right a'top Captain Jack Sparrow's head. Mr. Cotton didn't even try to warn Jack, but hide a smile by coughing loudly.

The parrot flew back down and landed on the rigging, squaking loudly in victory.

"SSQQUUUUAAAAAKKKKK!"

((thanks Pip! Your the best! :)))

"He must collect dem souls," Tia replied simply. "Dose who are already dead await him in de ot'er realm. But dose who are only dying, he must present a choice: sail wit' him, or pass on."

"Leverage," Beckett replied simply, his smile disappearing. "As I'm sure you are aware, Mrs. Turner, your husband has cost me a great deal of time, money, and other valuable assets. You will remain in my custody until I have regained these assets. An exchange, if you will....It's just good business, really."

Jack's kohl eyes skimmed the chaotic, sad mess of the ship that now had been stole of her power, dignity and who she stood for. Pity, every ship had a purpose, but this one was only built to be destroyed.

Besides the crackling of the fire and the groaning of the dieing ship, Jack's boots that walked across the splintered deck was the most prominent noise.

Suddenly, the Captain paused and looked upon a mess of a man. A soldier by the looks of it. He was wet, bruised, and splattered with blood.

Jack pricked his upper lip towards the sky and stared down at the weak man. The soldier was a wreak, but Jack had a duty.

"Ye there." Jack said, towering over the broken body. "I am Captain Jack Sparrow of The Flying Dutchman. Do you have the courage to follow orders and stay true in the face of danger and almost sudden dam.nation? Or shall I say it in the words of Jones himself...do ye fear death?"

"Ah," Will said with a lift of his chin toward the wrecked ship. "So that is what needs to be done as the Dutchman's captain. It must be difficult being in the presence of death nearly all the time," he said with a shake of his head.

Will's eyes watched Jack's figure and wondered just how well Jack actually performed his duty. In his opinion, he was afraid for him....Jack was never a man with a duty...but one that made his own decisions....a pirate...

"Jack Sparrow should not have been assigned dis role," Tia commented quietly, as if reading Will's thoughts. "Dere was another far more qualified for de job...but fate had its own ideas."

Marine Stephen Matheson stared in awe at the being that emerged from the ship's mast. It seemed human enough, but anything that could do that, in his experience, was no mere mortal. Not to mention the 'man' had traces of the sea all about him, as if the sea itself was slowly trying to reclaim him. No, this was decidedly not human.

As it slowly moved around the deck, examining the damage, Stephen suddenly became aware of the large shaft of wood piercing his abdomen. So that was why it was so hard to breathe all of a sudden. Suddenly the being stopped and began looking straight at him. Bug.ger. He was injured. He couldn't put up a fight. He was easy prey...

The marine steeled himself for an attack that never came. The being was...talking to him? It had a strangely human voice, though not all that surprising considering it did still appear to be at least mostly human. Stephen drew another shaky breath, squinting his eyes in an effort to focus on the words being spoken to him. Through the haze, however, two words stuck out the most prominently.

"C-C-Captain...Sparrow..." he managed to gasp. What was it about Captain Sparrow? It was something important...Oh, it was too hard to remember now, what with being on his figurative death bed....Beckett. Beckett wanted something with Captain Sparrow, and....Letter. Trembling hands slowly moved toward the inside lining of his coat and pulled out a folded piece of parchment. Aside from tattered edges and a few small blood splatters, it was mostly intact. He shakily lifted it up and handed it to the figure towering above him. "Lord Beckett...to...Captain Turner." Drawing one last shuddering breath, the marine's head fell back, and he knew no more.

Mr. Cotton looked at the newcomer and Sparrow as his parrot landed back on his shoulder. He tapped Mr. Gibbs' shoulder and the parrot squaked,

"Shiver me timbers!"

As if to say or ask, "Do you think Sparrow can stay this way for long?"

Jack Sparrow glanced down at the hollow body and how the eyes that were filled with life moments ago, now looked lost in the land of the dead.

"I'll take that as a no mate. . ." Sparrow said in reply to his own inquire to the man before he died.

Wait. A Letter for Mr. Turner? From Beckett? Thee Beckett?.

Like they say, curiosity killed the cat, or more so in this situation, the pirate. Jack bent down and in a cautious mannor, pulled the envelope from the soldier's clammed hands. This had to be given to William now, for the suspense was killing Jack.

Before Jack left, he examined the ship once more. No survivors. They had all passed on to the other side. With a solem face Jack left the scene, and vanished into the mast, only to re-emerge back onto the Black Pearl.

"No survivors. . ." Jack stated, quiet and dignified. "But one of 'em, gave me this."

Jack pulled out of his coat the letter from the soldier and he danced it about in the air, "It's for Captain Turner, from our dear old friend Beckett." His face forced a sarcastic grin of digust when he said the name.

"So I'm a hostage," snapped Elizabeth, not bothering to contain her fury. She rose from her chair with hardly an awkward struggle to stand upright, expression set in a decidedly poisonous glare. "I warn you, Will is going to be singularly disinclined to acquiesce to your requests. I suppose then I hang for invented crimes?" If possible she looked even angrier. "You're despicable."

She knew it was a lie. All of it. Elizabeth feared the moment Will knew of this he would go at all speed to give Beckett what he wanted - and he could not! Will - dear Will - don't come for me!

Returning a digusted face at Jack, Will questioned, "Beckett? THE Lord Beckett?" Stepping forward, he took the envelope from Jack and inspected the seal. Yes, it was from Cutler Beckett himself.

Breaking the seal, Will opened the envelope and pulled out the letter. His eyes glanced over the entire sheet for a moment and then his eyes began to scan one line at a time quietly. As Will read along, his expression changed from curiousity to shock.

Lowering the letter slowly, Will's chest rose heavily as his face remained blank. Not speaking a word to the crew, he stepped into the captain's quarters and shut the door behind him. Leaning against the doors, he shut his eyes and took long breaths trying to calm himself from the danger he could only sense Elizabeth and the child were in.

With the words from the letter swarming in his head, he knew he had to make decisions soon or the crew would begin asking questions....
