Post subject: Writing your own Novel. Posted: August 31st, 2005, 12:04 pm |

I was wondering if anyone else was interested in writing a book of their own? I certainly am..The only problem is there is a large writer's block.
I've got most of the characters underway ( It's a fantasy ) the biggest problem is I can't figure out the main problem.
Ex: In LotR Frodo has to destroy the Ring.
In Eragon, Eragon has to defeat Galbatorix because he's a Rider.
I'm stuck in that department.
Is there anyone out there who shares my troubles?

i completely understand your plight. i've been writing a story for the past three years, and it's hard! i often find inspiration in little objects, pictures, images that run in my head (and drive me mad)...and sometimes my dreams...also what i do is just write words down in a journal of sorts. whatever comes to my head, i'll put it into written words. stuff comes out that you never knew was there! and it also helps you when you go and write a story. of course, writing a novel isn't just free writing, you have to put structure to it as well, and that's the hard thing for me...good luck writing!

Oh, yes, I know exactly how you feel! I'm convinced that my "novel" doesn't have a plot... it just sort of formed, and so a lot of stuff that should be sub-plots, is now passing for a plot.
My problem isn't writer's block - it's time! I just want to write when I can sit down and write solidly. So I'm trying to work it out mentally before I write it seriously, in the hope that the plot will come to me eventually. (But my "sub-plots" are strong enough to work if I don't come up with anything better...)
I find this helps me get to know the characters, and I can envisage alternate scenes just to see how the characters react, and then mentally delete it - it doesn't have to become part of the plot. I also write down notes about the characters, or snippets of scenes as they come to me. (Hence I have written stuff from the start of the book, and then random scenes from later on.)
My advice is, if you are stuck with writer's block, write something you are not stuck on, even if it is the ending! I'm not sure if you really have to write the book chronologically. If you know where you are going, then you can then figure out how you are going to get there.
I gather that you are looking for a quest of sorts, more so than anything else. A good fail-safe is to throw the place they live into war. War causes a lot of tension, puts people in situation they'd otherwise not come across, creates enemies and lots of opportunity for action.
Look at your characters.
Also, coming up with "sub-plots" - tension between characters, arguments etc. can create some suspense to tie you over parts where your main plot lapses. Characters being treated unfairly helps us well. It's a small problem that has to be overcome (adds to suspense) and means that the reader is more likely to sympathise and feel strongly for them.
I hope that helps. I know how you feel - writer's block is awful. Good luck!

I know what you mean. I've been wanting to write a novel for years, but I can never seem to finish one. I keep coming up with a lot of great ideas, but I can never seem to follow through on any of them. The other day I came up with an idea that I absolutely love for a novel or movie, but I'm almost afraid to start it because I know it will never get done....

I recommend getting a baby name book that has a lot of weird names. Even if you end up making up your own names, it can give you ideas. There are name databases on the net that let you specify language, syllables and everything. Try googling it or something.
I hate mind blanks. When you try to write, and you just end up staring at a blank screen... It's so annoying.
I've only managed to finish one "novel" I wrote (except for ones when I was eleven, but they really don't count...) and I hate it that I have all these unfinished pieces floating around. Now I write down ideas in a notebook, so I can come back to them later...

If it's a Fantasy story, base the names off of Old Norse/Celtic/Middle and Old English mythology.

I usually don't have HUGE problems like that, I just think it through and then I'll be done with it. I'm glad you're a fantasy writer, email me the ideas for your story sometime, and I'll be glad to give you a few ideas: ladydarkwarrior@hotmail.com

I love writing! I dream that someday I'll actually finish a story of mine. I think my problem isn't in the plot, but in the POV. And maybe somewhat in the character development. I'm getting much better through experience.

they get there ideas from any where, really. It all depends on what inspires the writer of the story.

Well, I get some of my ideas from things I've dreamt. I know it sounds really weird. I've gone - that's a cool place or something, and tried to figure out who lives there... or sometimes it's a character, or a situation.
This is problematic because I have a great idea for a story (that yep, I got from a dream) that I can't write because I can't come up for a plausible reason for why the characters are in the situation that they are!
I'd suggest not being afraid to be influenced by other things you read (influence, don't copy.) and what you see around you.
I'd as advice thinking about your story when you are tired. Okay, so not all the ideas who come up with are brilliant, but I find I'm a bit freer with ideas, because I don't look at everything I come up with and go, scrap it, it's unrealistic. Sometimes I surprise myself, and realise that it wasn't as stupid/unrealistic as I thought.

Ok! You guys influence the decision!
I'm completely stuck for names for a lead character, male, human. Fantasy story. What name sounds best?
Ealdor
Scryan
Aodhain
Aidan
Other name suggestions?
