Hey, that'd be cool!

Este: "Oh look Mum! I just happened to bump in to someone I met online! Isn't that marvellous!

Mum: "Well it's certainly a coincidence..." *Le shifty eyes*"

 I've never been to the Cheshire show and I somehow doubt we'll be going this year. :( Sorry JF-ish-ness. Maybe next year! When is it anyways?

Well... I'd have to say you are an old schoolfriend or something. I'm going with my brother so I'm sure he's believe me. :eyeroll:

Er... it's a week on Tuesday and Wednesday. I'm going on the Wednesday. You should go sometime, it's great fun. Lots of animals and food (hmm) and displays and things like that. I am not going in any of the bird tents though.... too many outbreaks of bird flu in Cheshire and that's what set my OCD off in the first place. :-( I'm just trying not to think about it. It's werid because the past 2 years I've been worring about bird flu and saying that if it does happen it won't be round where I live, and there was an outbreak in Conwy Wales (very close to where I was), one in chicken market in Macclesfield (where we wer actually thinking of going on Wednesday) and now poilce etc, in St. Helen's and Merseyside (me) are taking precuations and things. :guilty: And the Cheshire show has lots of birds from all over the place, so what's to stop people getting infected there as well? 12 people got a mild strain in Macclesfield.

Talking about meeting up you are?
Mmm... I don't know why, but I wouldn't mind meeting any of you Brits... for some reason it's like I know you so well because you're always on here and post so much - and UK is definately closer than the U.S. ;-)
Did you ever talk about an A-U event in UK since so many of you [*cough* obviously, since this is the British Society] live there?

Everyone around me is talking about London. I'm dying to go there again, but I imagine it's a crowded, packed tourist trap during summer so I might wait til [s]fall[/s] autumn. :-)

Ahh, ok then.

Ack, that must be tough on you. But you're brave and you don't have to do anything you don't want to, or go in any of the tents you don't want to. It's great that your OCD isn't stopping you going all together.

Well, talking hypothetically. ;) We won't actually get to meet up, but we can talk hypothetically, ne? :P

Haha, an AU event in the UK. Something tells me my parents would be a little :wary: (*Hugs smiley*) of that. Although I think it'd be cool. Maybe when I'm a bit older and have more freeeedom I can come and see y'all at some point. :teehee:

Aye, some freedom will be needed before I can go off an meet fellow AUers. My parents would be pulling the same face as Estë's methinks. :P

@ JF: Actually, I've never been to the Cheshire show. Sounds wonderful though! Like a grand time.

Aw. That must be tough though with that constant reminder. Bird flu's not something to joke about, but its made worse when it makes you more than unpleasant.

Eep.... is there something I should know about bird flu that I possibly don't know about? Last I heard there was an antidote being made just in case so..... has the situation got worse? I'm terrfied to look on Wiki about it, as I know it's not really reliable, but even still I might believe what it says and make things worse.

I don't think it's got any worse, I'm not sure though as I don't really watch the news, but I'm pretty sure it hasn't got any worse or anything.

No the bird flu hasn't been on the news for months now, meaning it hasn't gotten worse. In fact it was never dangerous to humans, the people who died of it would most likely have died of a regular flu as well because they couldn't get antibiotics or because their immune system were already weak.
I'm no expert on bird flu but this is my general impression, so everything should be alright... and birds are our friends! :-)

Ohh .. okay... no official UK meeting, but probably some sneakiness if possible... Hmm.. I don't really understand why people online should be any worse than strangers in the street... and even a stranger in the street is just a potential new friend...

No, I don't either really. But it's because the net generally has such bad publicity, most adults/parents think everyone their children are talking to online is a paedophile. Kinda sad really.

Very sad. Even more so when your parents are a bit like that.
:(

 Alls well with the bird flu JF. As Eä said, there's been nothing about it on the news in a looong time. :)

Do you think you'll be as strict with the internet and with allowing your kids to meet with online friends when you become parents?
I really appreciate the freedom I was given because my parents always trusted me but I'm afraid I might become overprotective because I would know all the dangers because I'm older. *sigh* I really hope I can allow myself to let my kids climb the high trees knowing they'll most likely fall sometimes, I'll just cross my fingers that it wont be any worse than I was... Sometimes I really admire my mom that she let me do the things I wanted even though it must have been difficul to 'let go', but she trusted me.

It is sad that lots of parents are like that. Fortunately my father knows computers, and uses some forums himself, and he knows that paedophiles are the minority. And normally occupy some more shady places. In fact, when it was made apparent that I was going to be regularly using forums and such, one of the warnings he gave me was 'don't go and meet someone for the internet on your own'. Which i take to mean that i can go and meet people like you guys, as long as I take someone with me :D Maybe I'll try it one day :P

Parents must be constantly afraid of what can happen to their children but I believe a lot of it is really about knowing what the children are doing and then teach them the dangers and what to avoid. Basic common sense.
I have never met anyone from the internet in reality, but I'm sure it'll happen sometime :-)

Nope, I don't. Partly because the time in which we will have grown up is quite the techno-age, one might say, and therefore meeting up with someone you have met online won't be so out of this world and foreign as it has been to our parents. And partly because of other reasons. Lol. I think as long as people are sensible there's no reason why they can't meet up, although I doubt I'd let my child meet up with someone for the first time alone. But I wouldn't trail after them either, I'd respect the fact that they need space.

Teh Este hath spoken. xD As teh JF-ish-ness might say.

errrm Guys and gals?
This is kinda, errrrrmmmm not British esque lol. But I gotta say I do agree with Este , in that teenagers do need some more space in what they want to do. As long as it is done sensibly, like having a mate along when meeting someone for the first time etc.
anyways, how did we start on this topic anyways?
