I think I have the answer...Most of Legolas' lines in the book had to be taken out because the situation he spoke of was also cut from the story. So they would give him a random captain obvious line. Not too happy about it...
For example. In the book he could see Eomer and his company when they were still miles away, how many there were, and that they had yellow hair. But in the movie they wanted the riders to surprise them, so instead they gave Legolas the line, "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard!" Duh.
Also, he saw an eagle bringing news to somebody, and that wasn't important to PJ but it was really cool. He kept going, "An eagle! Look, there it goes again. Look, Aragorn! Look, look!" Finally Aragorn is like, "Sorry, I can't see it! I can't see as far as you can!!" It's all paraphrased of course. There are many more examples where Legolas had a lot to say but his lines were "not needed".

Hmmm, that's a tough one...

I really have no idea why they did that. I guess the first two could be to help people who hadn't read the books (I saw the movies first, and I did't have a hard time following. *shrugs*). But the diversion... What else could it be?

Hmm yeah what you say is right actually. Good observation. I didn't actually realize it.. but now you're saying it. I think it's quite sad that Legolas has been given so many random lines..

My friend and I did a marathon a couple days ago with the EEs, and counted how many "deeper" lines Leggy had. There are about a dozen. but we love him anyway!

Basically. Though we did start counting about halfway through FOTR, so we might have missed one or two. We've also nicknamed him "Epiphany Boy" because he had an awful lot of those.

I guess its the blondeness that makes Legolas Capt. Obvious or he just wants to sound smart.

Well, actually... blame Pete Elves are supposed to be intelligent, deep and wise, regardless of their hair colour. He made Legolas look like a silly outcast

HEY! bloonds R smaert an stuf!!1! ima blond11!!1
*cough*
Well, it seems pretty obvious to us, but for people who haven't read the books and can't keep straight who is who and have kind of zoned out by that point, the obvious remarks really help them out! I know a lot of people who could barely follow even with Legolas' remarks.

Yes. People have been calling Legolas Captain Obvious since The Fellowship first came out.
"Orcs!"
"Goblins!"
"Crabain from Dublin!"
"There is a fell voice on the air!"

Ha ha! That was so stupid of me... I'm not even blonde! I have no idea where my head was when I posted that.
He was! Yes. A strange figure clad in green and brown, wasn't it? But I think most everything is better in the book.

Frodofan: LOL it's okay... we all have Legolas moments
But yeah, the book was definitely better... for Legolas's character, anyhow. He was FAR from stupid in the book
