Ok, this is mainly asking if anyone else has read the classic Pride and Prejudice (stupid question, right?) and what they thought of the book in comparison to the movie (either movie works although so far I've only seen the newer 2005 version ). I'm planning on reading the book next time I get to the library to borrow it.... so I just want your guys' opinions on it now. it doesn't matter if it's a hard read or anything... I like challenging, un-fluffy books (like LotR and Charles Dickens) that make you think. also just for a side note I was wondering if anyone else has read Wives and Daughters.... I LOVE the BBC mini-tv series based on the book but I've never read the actual story... I have heard it's a lot like Jane Austen's books though. *shrug* (and our library probably won't even have it anyway ) so any comments?

I haven't read P&P in a while, but I remember liking it. If you can follow LotR, you shouldn't have any trouble with it. The main thing is that a lot of stuff occurs in letters, more so than in the movies, so you just have to get accustomed to that.

I read P&P in eighth grade and I liked it, though it was before reading LOTR so I had a bit of trouble with some parts. Now that I've (finally) seen the 2005 version (and fallen in love with it ) I'm rereading the book and enjoying it.

I read P&P last year. It took me a while to get through the first half, and I felt dreadful for not enjoying it because I knew it was a good book, but the second half was enthralling. I then watched the old A&E movie and was so happy with it I chose not to see the new one.
I like Sense and Sensibility even better.

I'm rereading it now! I read it two years ago, before I saw the movie, and I decided to start rereading it a couple of days ago. I like it even better the second time around. I thought the 2005 version did a magnificent job, and they even took quotes straight out of the book. Mostly they only left out little things like extra parties, but otherwise, it's all the same.

I actually read P&P just last year when I discovered the '05 movie here. It's definitely a good read. The dialect is a challenge sometimes, but if you're up for the challenge then I say go for it! If you get through that one okay then I suggest reading Sense and Sensibility. [The movie is fantastic as well!]

Thanks for answering me, you guys! (and all with very helpful/good answers too ) well, I borrowed it from our library the other day so I'll get to reading it ASAP. oh, I'm not to worried about the language or any of that.... I love reading the classics (actually when I read those are almost all I read ) so I'm quite use to it by now.

boy, now I'm really looking forward to reading it! (and when I'm done I'll have to FINALLY sit down and watch the BBC version of it) Also when I'm done I will have to read Sense and Sensibility too... and my mom owns the movie so I'll have to watch it sometime.

I read P&P a couple of years ago when the 05 film came out. My English teacher and my mum ganged up on me and said I could only watch the film once I'd read the book. My teacher had been trying to get me to read it for years.
I've also seen the old BBC version, I think I prefer the film out of the 2. The film is easier to watch. 6 hours of Austen on dvd can be a bit daunting, though the BBC one is good to listen to while revising.

I actually started reading it a few days ago and I find it a pretty easy read... the chapters are fairly short so far and the language/dialect isn't to different from what I'm use to. It's quite enjoyable really.... (and I'm finding that the 2005 version is quite a bit like the novel so far)

About Wives and Daughters--Elizabeth Gaskell is like a mix of Charlotte Bronte, Jane Austen, and Charles Dickens. I love her writing, and if you've seen the miniseries, you shouldn't have any trouble. The one problem with it is that she died before it was completed, so we don't get the very end of the story. She also wrote a great novel called "North and South" which was made into a wonderful miniseries, so if you can get your hands on either of those, I think you'd like them. Hope you enjoy P&P (I'm a book and BBC fan. )

I almost thought I was the only one who had ever heard of it! lol hm, I looked at our library and they don't have the book (surprise, surprise). but I would be very interested in reading it someday (maybe I'll have to just buy it...) even if it doesn't have a proper ending. (which is a shame ) Oh, North and South! I saw that miniseries too! It was very good! (although I admit I enjoyed Wives and Daughters more ) thanks! I will!

Very sorry for bringing such an old back from the dead.. but it was the only topic I could find discussing P&P exclusively.. and I felt I couldn't bother the general Jane Austen thread any more with my rantings on P&P.

Anyway.. I'm almost halfway through it and as many of you said... I find it really difficult to get through.. I mean it just didn't succeed in capturing my attention...
Okay, what's it with Mr Bennet.. that poor man must suffer a great deal living under the same roof as so many females... but he does seem to be the one to keep his sanity though.. I was just wondering, why on earth would he have married Mrs Bennet? Would he gain anything from such an alliance or was it actually a matter of love for them?
