Host's Choice = chosen by the host, if they were based on points that I would be very peeved with those contests. :p

However, the host's ability to choose the person of that award has to sacrifice the right to vote.

- What sort of graphics contests do you prefer?
I prefer banners, or smaller blends such as 600x400.

- What do you look for in a contest before joining?
The rules and duedate.

- When voting for a contest what kind of "set-up" is helpful to you?
I like the ones that let you have some freedome with your entries and don't tie you down to using certain scenes or pictures.

- When you're looking for a contest to join what sort of thread title catches your eye?
Something with lots of asterisks [*_*]

- How do you prefer awards to be posted?
In the next round of the contest.

- Do you like contests to be more "open" or more structured in the sense that pics/themes etc. are given to you? Does it present more of a challenge when the contest is more specific?
I don't like when there's set pictures/scenes you need to use because it sort of restricts what you can do.

- When you read the first post of a contest thread what do you look for?
The due date, number of participants and what kind of graphic you're making.

- More specifically with my contests, do you like having a complete list of links to previous contests and awards?
I think it's great to be able to reference the old contests.

How much time do you think is reasonable for creating your entry?
A week seems like a really long time, but it's probably the best. That way people are pushed to do their entry and won't forget as easily.

- Do you like the award system? [1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM, HC]
It's awesomenessful. :)

- What do you think should be done when there is a tie between two participants when voting?
Let them both have an award - it means they both tried hard and one shouldn't be picked over the other. It's not fair.

- When voting do you like the participants' names to be anonymous or included? Do you think leaving the participant's name makes people more likely to win than others?
I do think that people's names influence others' votes. When I see teh JFishness, I'm just like - "Yep, I'm voting for her!" That kind of thing. So participants names should be anonymous.

- If you prefer the participants' names to remain anonymous what do you think it should be substituted for?
Numbers and letters sounds good - just as long as the host can remember who made what entry.

- Do you read the rules every time you enter a contest?
If I'm really excited I'll join first and then go back and read the rules, but yes.

- Does it make things any more difficult for you if your contest entry is required to be a specific size?
It kills me when I have to make a 700x500 blend, as those are more challenging for me. And I don't like when banners are other sizes than 700x150. It's rather annoying.

- More specifically with my contests - I tend to go over the contest participant limit. [That I have set. Tongue] Do you think this is unfair? Or do you believe contest participant limits can be changed?
It would be mean to turn someone away if the contest was full, so I think it's a bit unfair in that sense.

- Do you like being PMed 3 days or so before the contest due date? Is it more convenient to contact you another way?
Yeah, it gets the procrastinator side of me going again.

- My system of letting participants ask to extend the due date for contest entries seems a bit flawed in the sense that it doesn't seem fair to give someone else extra time when the majority of the participants managed to post their entries on time. Should I do away with this system altogether?
I think it should be done away with because you're right - if someone can't get their entry in on time, it's their fault, not yours. After all, the duedate was right there and if they couldn't get their entry in before then, they shouldn't have entered.

Fun survey, Larael! :teehee:

Again, thank you for the replies! I'll leave this up a few more days, so that I can get a wide range of opinions. :)

- Personally, I like blends and banners.
- I usually look to see if the topic or prompt inspires me. If I take one look at it and have no inspiration, then I probably won't join.
- For blends and wallpapers, thumbnails is nice. For banners and avatars, having the picture up is better.
- I like it when part of the quote or theme is in the title, so I know even before I click on it the general idea.
- If the contest is a one round thing, then in a new thread. If it's a continuing contest, then in the next round.
- The less specific, the easier. Sometimes if it's really strict, it's hard to get ideas, but if it's less strict, there are a bunch of different ways you can go.
- I read what the contest is about, and maybe skim through the rules. I also check the due date.
- Personally, I don't look at the previous rounds. But that's just me.
- Anything longer than three weeks is too generous.
- The award system is perfect, unless there's 5 participants. Because then 4 people get awards, and if you do host's choice, it isn't really your choice because there's only one left, ya know?
- Definitely give both people awards if there's a tie. After all, they both earned it. ;)
- I think the name does influence the vote. Some people are just... good, and when you see their name on the entry, you automatically assume it's better than the rest of the entries, even if it isn't.
- Numbers and letters seems good. I like the letter idea.
- Of course I read the rules. :P
- The size doesn't really matter a whole lot. I'll do whatever it says. But I think it's easier to judge when they're all somewhat similar, in the sense of shape and size.
- Going over the participant limit is fine. Saying no to somebody would just be rude. However, sometimes contests get really crowded, and there's almost too many entries. And when that happens, there's also less people to vote.
- Getting a PM is great. ;)
- Extending the due date doesn't seem right, especially if the participants have already had a long time to get their entry in. Most people are able to get their entries in on time. And even if the person who wants the extension doesn't get an entry in, there's always the next round. I'd say do away with that. ;)

Nice survey, by the way. :) That was fun.

*Quick note--
I can't make graphics, but I still wanted to give my input. I hope that is alright.*

What sort of graphics contests do you prefer
Banners. Or writing.

What do you look for in a contest before joining?
Organization or creativity or simply if I am interested, with a good theme.

When voting for a contest what kind of "set-up" is helpful to you?
The actual entries, not links.

When you're looking for a contest to join what sort of thread title catches your eye?
Writing threads! (since I can't make banners) Or creative ones.

How do you prefer awards to be posted?
Part of the next round.

Do you like contests to be more "open" or more structured in the sense that pics/themes etc. are given to you? Does it present more of a challenge when the contest is more specific?
I like it when people get to chose there own pictures for variety, but when they are given pics, that is more of a challenge.

When you read the first post of a contest thread what do you look for? [Rules, number of participants, what the contest is about, etc.]
The main rules and the subject of the contest, along of what round it is in.

More specifically with my contests, do you like having a complete list of links to previous contests and awards?
I think that is really cool, but it would be hard to keep track.

How much time do you think is reasonable for creating your entry? [A week for a banner, 2 weeks for a sig set, etc.]
2 weeks, for anything. RL can get in the way at the most unexpected times.

Do you like the award system? [1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM, HC]
Yes. :D

What do you think should be done when there is a tie between two participants when voting? [Another vote should be held, both receive awards, etc.]
Both should recieve awards.

When voting do you like the participants' names to be anonymous or included? Do you think leaving the participant's name makes people more likely to win than others?
I like to put contestants names in, you just have to hope your voters will be honest.

If you prefer the participants' names to remain anonymous what do you think it should be substituted for? [Numbers, letters, etc.]
Numbers.

Do you read the rules every time you enter a contest?
-Cannot comment ^see note above*

Does it make things any more difficult for you if your contest entry is required to be a specific size?
I don't think it would, unless it was smaller than normal.

More specifically with my contests - I tend to go over the contest participant limit. [That I have set. ] Do you think this is unfair? Or do you believe contest participant limits can be changed?
I think that is perfectly fine! I do that quite a lot, actually.

Do you like being PMed 3 days or so before the contest due date? Is it more convenient to contact you another way?
Yeah, I think that is good, but it is sometimes hard on the contest creater to have to do so, but yes.

My system of letting participants ask to extend the due date for contest entries seems a bit flawed in the sense that it doesn't seem fair to give someone else extra time when the majority of the participants managed to post their entries on time. Should I do away with this system altogether?
Honestly, I am not sure. I know what you are talkign about here, but it is very hard to say on the matter, with real life and all. I am as stumped as you are on this one, I am sorry to say. :( I have extented dates on almost all the contests I've made, and it is quite annoying, actually, to have to do so, but I don't want to be rude, so...

Thanks for responding, Tur. I think it's great to hear from non-graphics making contest participants as well.

I know you didn't ask for this bit of information, and it probably doesn't really concern your contests....

OMG I hate abbreviated contest titles! GRR! It was Ok when there was a couple of them, but it is soo annoying when I'm trying to update everything, and then I spend 10 minutes like Hercule Poirot, trying to work out what the great multitude of letters mean, until I give up and then have to check the actual thread for the title.

- What sort of graphics contests do you prefer? [Banners, sig sets, avatars, blends, etc.]
I prefer banners, sig sets, and small blends. No wallpapers for me!
- What do you look for in a contest before joining?
Subject of the contest, type of graphic, and duedate :)
- When voting for a contest what kind of "set-up" is helpful to you? [Pics & links, just links, thumbnails, etc.]
Pictures or thumbnails. I'm too lazy to click links!
- When you're looking for a contest to join what sort of thread title catches your eye?
One that clearly states what type of contest it is, and what the subject is. I rarely ever click a contest that's title is full of little decorative symbols, such as ~* and the like.
- How do you prefer awards to be posted? [In a separate thread, as part of the next rounds thread, etc.]
In the next round.
- Do you like contests to be more "open" or more structured in the sense that pics/themes etc. are given to you? Does it present more of a challenge when the contest is more specific?
I like it when the challenge is more specific. It helps me have a better idea of what I should be doing for the contest.
- When you read the first post of a contest thread what do you look for? [Rules, number of participants, what the contest is about, etc.]
What the contest is about and the rules.
- More specifically with my contests, do you like having a complete list of links to previous contests and awards?
Yes, I do. it just makes everything more organized feeling, and I like that :)
- How much time do you think is reasonable for creating your entry? [A week for a banner, 2 weeks for a sig set, etc.]
I feel that anywhere between one to two weeks is a reasonable amount of time for any graphic.
- Do you like the award system? [1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM, HC]
Sure do.
- What do you think should be done when there is a tie between two participants when voting? [Another vote should be held, both receive awards, etc.]
Both should recieve awards.
- When voting do you like the participants' names to be anonymous or included? Do you think leaving the participant's name makes people more likely to win than others?
I prefer the names to be anonymous.
- If you prefer the participants' names to remain anonymous what do you think it should be substituted for? [Numbers, letters, etc.]
Numbers.
- Do you read the rules every time you enter a contest?
Yes, unless it's a contest with rounds, and the rules are the same each round.
- Does it make things any more difficult for you if your contest entry is required to be a specific size?
No.
- More specifically with my contests - I tend to go over the contest participant limit. [That I have set. ] Do you think this is unfair? Or do you believe contest participant limits can be changed?
I think it's fine that you allow more participants. I actually prefer contests where you don't have to sign up, and can just post an entry.
- Do you like being PMed 3 days or so before the contest due date? Is it more convenient to contact you another way?
I'm fine with being PMed.
- My system of letting participants ask to extend the due date for contest entries seems a bit flawed in the sense that it doesn't seem fair to give someone else extra time when the majority of the participants managed to post their entries on time. Should I do away with this system altogether?
No, I believe it's fine to allow the participants to request more time.

I hope these answers help you!

Ah, it's Ok Tur. I'd only just got up when I wrote that, I was trying to get all the contest section updated before I went out... and it's that time of the month for me today... so... I was being grumpy, let's be honest. :P

Don't worry dear, your not the only one in that time of the month, and I understand. I just have long contest titles, so I shortened them...

- What sort of graphics contests do you prefer? [Banners, sig sets, avatars, blends, etc.]
I really like banners or sig sets. I'm terrible at blends so I tend to stay away from them.
- What do you look for in a contest before joining?
A topic I'm interested in, something that's not due tomorrow.
- When voting for a contest what kind of "set-up" is helpful to you? [Pics & links, just links, thumbnails, etc.]
Definitely pictures. Thumbnails are okay, although it's harder to compare them then.
- When you're looking for a contest to join what sort of thread title catches your eye?
One that's specific--and I agree about the all the letters, unless it's fairly obvious.
- How do you prefer awards to be posted? [In a separate thread, as part of the next rounds thread, etc.]
Doesn't really matter to me, as long as it's clear where they are.
- Do you like contests to be more "open" or more structured in the sense that pics/themes etc. are given to you? Does it present more of a challenge when the contest is more specific?
I like them to be specific without being restrictive, if that makes sense. If there's no structure at all, I struggle with the overwhelming possibilities, but if there's too much structure it can be annoying.
- When you read the first post of a contest thread what do you look for? [Rules, number of participants, what the contest is about, etc.]
What it's about, rules. I don't tend to worry about the number of contestants at first.
- More specifically with my contests, do you like having a complete list of links to previous contests and awards?
It doesn't really matter to me, although it's kind of fun to look back through the old ones.
- How much time do you think is reasonable for creating your entry? [A week for a banner, 2 weeks for a sig set, etc.]
A week-2 weeks. I think a month is too long because people tend to forget about the contest.
- Do you like the award system? [1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM, HC]
Yes, definitely.
- What do you think should be done when there is a tie between two participants when voting? [Another vote should be held, both receive awards, etc.]
Both should receive awards
- When voting do you like the participants' names to be anonymous or included? Do you think leaving the participant's name makes people more likely to win than others?
I like anonymously because it just feels more fair to me. Not that I think anyone is intentionally cheating or anything.
- If you prefer the participants' names to remain anonymous what do you think it should be substituted for? [Numbers, letters, etc.]
Letters or numbers, either works for me.
- Do you read the rules every time you enter a contest?
If it's the first time I've entered a particular contest I'll read the rules, or if I feel like I need a refresher.
- Does it make things any more difficult for you if your contest entry is required to be a specific size?
No, I just have to remember which size it is for which contest. :p
- More specifically with my contests - I tend to go over the contest participant limit. [That I have set. Tongue] Do you think this is unfair? Or do you believe contest participant limits can be changed?
Oh, I definitely like letting as people enter as they want to.
- Do you like being PMed 3 days or so before the contest due date? Is it more convenient to contact you another way?
Um, I don't really care, but it's nice, I suppose.
- My system of letting participants ask to extend the due date for contest entries seems a bit flawed in the sense that it doesn't seem fair to give someone else extra time when the majority of the participants managed to post their entries on time. Should I do away with this system altogether?
If they're asking for a day or two, that's fine. But if they're asking for a week, no.
