My friend and I were watching Oprah the other day (lol!) and Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of the NY Times bestseller, Eat, Pray, Love, was the guest. We heard her talking about this book, and we both are like "We need it now!" So 2 days later we both went to Barnes & Noble to buy it :P

My friend has already finished it and said it's amazing. I'm about 1/2 way through the book, and it's amazing.

It is a very good book that makes you think about life, and how you respond to situations. It's pretty much a memoir/autobiography about how the author spent a year 'reclaiming' her life in Italy, India, and Indonesia. In Italy she spent 4 months learning the art of "pleasure" - eating anything and everything she wanted. Then she went to India for 4 months to study meditation and devotion. And finally in Indonesia, she learned to combine the pleasure and devotion together in her life. The coolest thing is that it's her real story.

Has anyone else read it/wants to read it/heard of it? :teehee:

Never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. It sounds very interesting.

Be sure to post your final opinion of it on here, too. :P

Gilraen!! Because of you... I have just gotten Eat, Pray, Love! I was in the bookstore to return a book and saw this book and I knew I had heard about it here, so I got it. The bad thing is that one of the recommandations on the back says: "A good read" and something more.. quote: Britney Spears... hmm... anyway, I'm looking forward to read it.
Did you finish?

Well, it might not necessarily be a good thing that celebs read it... but I'm looking forward to start it... but I'll probably save it a couple of weeks. :-)

I know, I know... but don't judge a book by it's cover - or entirely by those who recommend it!! ;-)
I believe the poor book deserves a fair chance, despite what the publishers put on the cover - the content may still be worth a read...
You don't even feel the slightest temptation, dear Aerlinn?

*reads the back of the book*

"If a more likeable writer than Gilbert [author: Elizabeth Gilbert] is currently in print, I haven't found him or her ... Gilbert's prose is fuelled by a mix of intelligence, wit and colloquial exuberance that is close to irresistable."

"A good read. I can't get away from it."

"A writer of incandescent talent."

"Hilarious, brilliant and unashamedly spiritual ... A book I never wanted to end."

That is what the critics write... I know, never trust the reviews but I just wanted to tempt you further! :P

By the way, the quotes are from:
New York Times
Britney Spears
Annie Proulx
Esther Freud
(I have no idea who the last two are...)

That's it... I've started reading the book...finally!! Last night when I couldn't fall asleep I started the book and read the first 20 pages... She is writing in a very straight-forward way, almost like a personal journal. The first two chapters are mostly introduction so I can't say much about it yet - and I'll probably be reading it in small bits because I'm studying for an exam too.

Good girl, Aerlinn! :P
One of the things I like so much about A-U is the many different things I discover because others talk about it. I would never have bought this book if I hadn't seen the thread here and remmebered it when I saw the book in the bookstore. :-)

So I finished it... I think I liked it.. at least I liked the theme of the book, not necessarily her own personal story, but the over all idea about personal development and the courage to do it was neat.
And her sense of self irony and humour was very entertaining! :-)
