So at what point do you guys decide "Hmmm I think I should buy this DVD" or "I think I'll want to rent it."? Like how often do you buy movies. And is there a particular reason why you buy that particular movie? Just odd questions that I wanted to ask.

I do not even consider buying a movie unless it is 10 dollars or under. However, even then, it has to be a really good movie. Many movies, to me, are one-timers every year or two. Basically, most movies are for the storyline, and, when you already know what is going to happen, there is no real enjoyment watching it.

It has to gage on just how much I love the movie. For example, I loved Phantom of the Opera, and so I bought it and now I still pull it out to watch it whenever so it was definitely worth it.
The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions I bought because there was no way that I was going to waste money and buy the original and then the Extended.
Again, it usually depends on how much I love the films. I love the PotC's but I only have the first film on DVD, unfortunately. King Kong was a spontaneous thing just so that I could have Thomas Kretschmann at hand. [blush]

I went halves with my parents on the LotR Extended Editions, and then bought the Special Extended Editions With Never-Before-Seen Documentaries (heh) myself...and I intend to buy the PotC box set when it comes out (because it has to. Their marketing people are idiots if they don't come out with a box set, I tell you) but those are the only movies I've bought for myself. They definitely have to be movies I LOVE.

I'll buy a movie if I've seen it and like it enough to watch again and again.
There are some exceptions where I've not seen it in the theatre, but know I'd like it. So I'll just buy it.
I mostly use a site called Play.com as there prices even for new releases are very reasonable, but they also do great sales now and then and you can pick up a lot of good deals.

dvds are a great weakness of mine (on average, i buy at least one a week), but i only ever buy them when they're on sale or special offer - i own over 100 dvds, and i haven't paid full price for any of them. i tend to watch films over and over again, so it's always worth me buying them. and i don't only buy films i've already seen - i would guess that over half my dvd collection is made up films i've bought on reccomendation, before having seen them.

I don't really buy movie DVDs, unless it's LotR. That's one of the only movies that I own on DVD.
TV shows, however, I'll buy if I really liked a certain season or if I want to see previous seasons that they probably won't rerun.

Well as my DVD collection and my brothers currently adds up at over 530 (and that count was before our bitrhday's and Christmas) I think it is safe to say, we like to buy DVD's.
If we go the cinema and we like the film we see, we buy it when it is comes out. There is so much competition now from all different shops, that DVD's on the whole, are getting cheaper. HMV in particularly good for deals and prices, and if it's still a bit expensive, we wait a month or so, until it's cheaper.
As for renting, well my brother rents DVD's from our library, but that's only because he has a special card which gives him a very good deal. The films he tends to rent are ones that he either couldn't see at the cinema, or for example like Clint Eastwoods Iwa Jima films, had a very small cinema release. If any of those films he likes, he'll add them to his list and then if he can get them for a reasonable price he'll buy them.
I used to tape and keep a lot of old films off the TV, but this year there has been so little on that I have been starved of films. Just the other week On The Town was on, and I didn't really realise how much I enjoyed it until after the tape had been re-used... so now I'm trying to buy it... for as cheap as possible as I'm stingy. 
Personally, I don't see the point of only buying DVD's of films you really, really, really, really like. To me that's like not having books on a shelf. DVD's are so easy to pick up for good prices that you'd have to only like films tha come in super-super-duper-special-edition format, for you not to be able to buy it for a good price.
As for LOTR: well the theatrical versions my brother bought himself, the EE's were all purchased as gifts and the SE's he also bought himself. Apart from the EE's the other versions were all cheap, and the fact that they all have different stuff on them, and that we both love special features, to us, they were worth having.

We pay a good bit for the movie channels and such on digital cable, so we generally don't buy DVDs. For me, it depends on how often I get an urge to watch it, and if I can get it for a good price.

I actually have to buy all of my DVDs... because the libraries' films all suck, I don't have a membership to Blockbuster so I can't rent them... and my computer's too slow to download them 
But it's worth it because you get the pretty box, the papers, and all that... and it supports the film company.
Like... I have all three versions for LotR... Theatrical, Extended and Limited. Just because they all look different and it's a nice feeling just to own them all  _________________

I won't specifically buy a DVD of a film I have taped, but if one of my taped films happens to be in a box set that I want, then that's fine as I can free up space on a tape.
@ Haldy - I agree. DVD's with their nice covers and thin cases and oodles of stuff are nice to have, whether you want it just for the film, the features or whatever.

Ah I used to tape stuff off the tv as well.
Films, tv shows, documentaries, wrestling and music videos. Literally hundreds of tapes are packed away in boxes. Though a lot of the films we replaced on dvd, mainly for the quality. Plus a lot of the movies were tv edits, so they had a lot of the movies cut out. Then you have all the neat extras and what not on dvds that I love watching.

I love buying DVD's, and since I tend to watch, re-watch and watch movies again, I buy them. But, it doesnt really seem like a lot, but you can end up buying two DVD's for 40 dollars, and you have no money left. So I usually end up buying DVD's a while after they have been released, they are usually cheaper, and often you can get two for the price of one, or one and a half.
I don't have that many DVD's, since there aren't a lot of movies that I really like. And I would buy more, if I had a job. Some of the speical edition ones can get pretty pricey, and I hate spending more than 20 bucks on a DVD.

If I happen to really, really like a movie (like Pirates 3) I'll go buy my own copy, or ask for it for my birthday or something. With some other, more "family" movies (like Ratatouille or National Treasure) my mom will just buy then when she can find them sorta cheap. And then we have about 2 dozen Disney animated classics on VHS that we really should either buy the DVDs of or burn onto a DVD ourselves... _________________
