@ Ea - I see what you're saying, and I agree with most of what you said. I don't think think there is any era where it was all good, good, good. There are downsides to every age, and unless we could go back to that age, but remove all the bad stuff, I doubt anyone would truly what to step back in time.

@ Larael - I agree, it is amazing what people would do for each other. But in Cranford they only had a paper once a week, so the old women of the town for example, would have to visit people far and wide to get the juicy news and then spread it around. So that was another reason people spoke to one another. Now we have newspapers to do that, but even so, not everyone who needs help will be mentioned, whereas in days gone by word would have soon got round.

*sigh*

I think I have probably exhausted my views on this now. The only thing I will say though is there is just one thing I wish we could take from the world of Jane Austen:

Respect - Self-respect and respect for others. I think we need more of this today. So many people have no self-respect. I'm not saying that everyone should walk around in bonnets and corsets, but I despair sometimes when I'm in Asda doing shopping and people come in to buy milk wearing pink pajama's and fluffy slippers (it happens more often than you can imagine).

You both have good points, and I want to thank you for having shared your personal views, as well as having listened to mine. I feel I understand you a little bit more now and we might not be so far apart on our views after all. :-)

Larael, I like what you said about how we might over compensate and reach too far. When I look at the people I associate with (and I use 'associate' again, because some of the people I am referring to might be co-workers or fellow students, people I spend a good time with but might not necessarily be actual 'friends') I realise that we humans have so much in common. I pick my friends among the people I associate with - not a surprising revelation, I know - so they could as well be the ones living closest to me. For a couple of years I had a New Year's resolution saying to try to be friendlier and more smiling to everyone I met because it might brighten their day. I should attempt to live up to that. :-)

And on the topic of self-respect. I couldn't agree more. And I believe we are lacking a general degree of respect for our fellow human beings today. Everyone needs respect and acknowledgement.

My mom accuses me for never been able to end a discussions, and it might be true, but it's so interesting, I can always find new perspectives.
However, I believe you are right, Gimli, we might have exhausted the topic by now.
So Alan rickman, you say? :P

I was browsing IMDB and saw that the movie Snow Cake was released last year. It stars actors like Sigourney Weaver, Carrie-Anne Moss and Alan Rickman. "A drama focused on the friendship between a high-functioning autistic woman (Weaver) and a man (Rickman) who is traumatized after a fatal car accident." (IMBD)
Anyone seen it, heard of it? It looks really good.

Aye, I've seen the trailer for it, but I haven't heard much else. It's not very well known, but I've heard it's not a bad movie.

No, Larael... it can't be a bad mobie with that cast!! :-)

Welcome back Inwe. I don't know about the ratings but I can give you a list of the movies I can remember with AR in it - in no particular order. Also didn't you ask me for a list of the AR movies I've seen.. here you get it all in one!! ;-)

- Die Hard (still need to see it)
- Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves (skip over Kevin Costner and enjoy a deliciously mean sheriff of Nottingham!)
- Galaxy Quest (Star Trek parody, I've yet to see it)
- Help! I'm a Fish (AR does the voice of one of the fish - and sings!!)
- Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (Bad movie imho, but he does the voice of Marvin)
- Sense & Sensibility (Great movie, great story, great cast!)
- Love Actually (See above!)
- Snow Cake (I want to see it, it's a drama)
- Sweeney Todd (I have to wait until February 1st!!!!)
- And of course the Harry Potter movies... but I assume you know that! :P

Great banner, by the way... what movie is it from?

*drools*

I've seen that music video several times before, but it gets me every time. :swoon:

Inwe - You're not alone dearie. My mum was picky about the movies I watched for the longest time. Actually, she still is! Most anything over a 15 can't be viewed by me without her consent. I think she's doing it so as to be fair to my younger sister, but I'm convinced she's just being overprotective. Ah well, no hurt in that I guess.

Anyway, I believe Die Hard and Love Actually are pretty highly rated. Most likely both 15 [R]. I definitely suggest watching Galaxy Quest and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy [the latter for some delicious AR shmexy voice]. Both of those aren't too highly rated and are both a good laugh. :)

And yeah, I saw Sweeney Todd whilst in the US for the holidays...

Oaky. I've been away for so long I have no idea what you're talking about but I just wanted to come here to tell how happy I'm 'cause Sense and sensibility is shown on TV this weekend (again)! In Finland I mean...And I watched Dogma at christmas (DVD). I'm not sure it's the same name in English but anyways...

I haven't seen Dogma either... is it good?

I just watched Sweeney Todd today. It opened here yesterday (I think we were the last ones in the whole wide world to be graced with the newest AR movie - shame!)
I loved it... all of AR's scenes were great. He played his character very Snape-ish, which wasn't a bad thing... and what is it about all of AR's characters having to wear very tight pants!! :P

I don't know when his birthday is. I don't want to know his exact age... but I'm sure you can google him easily. :-)

*sighs an ardent sigh in a silent corner*
Aww I miss being a rabid fangirl... now I feel like a tame fangirl who lost her bark....

*waits patiently for the new [s]Snape[/s] HP movie hoping it will promote some renewed AR-love*

Ohh look at me... I am the epitome of patheticness... triple-posting yet again... Come forth dear Alan Rickman fans, I know you are out there.
I just watched the last 10 minutes of Blow Dry and realised AR is in it.. and then I regretted I hadn't checked the cast list before so I wouldn't have missed another divine opportunity to enjoy AR!
