^Predictable is his middle name.
Here's my review for Brisingr, and book four:
Stale and predictable. The characters have progressed little from the first book. Saphira was dissapointing. Eragon much more so. Roran showed promise for a few seconds. No unexpected deaths. We all knew it was going to happen. The writing reminded me of how I wrote when I was in grade one. "Show, Don't Tell."

I understand your reaction, Darky, although I don't agree in all points. I don't think his writing is all that bad, and the plot is not very surprising, but it's much better than many other mock-LotR fantasy books. I like Inheritance much more than HP, and please don't kill me for that.
He is predictable, but only to a certain extent. I can't predict, for instance, what the ending (Eragon leaving Alagaesia) will be like. Perhaps you have some idea?
And yes, I will read the two books, but I see what you mean.

Agreed - it could be worse, even if Paolini has trouble with originality. I, personally, like HP quite a bit better, but it's not as though Eragon's horrible

Quote: There is no fantasy book written that it not derived from Tolkien's works. My uncle always says that and it is so true. Tolkien started fantasy almost singlehandedly (perhaps with C.S Lewis). In each and every fantasy book one happens to open, there will be traces of Tolkien. If anyone has read David Eddings, its slightly original. Now what Paolini has done is take all the ideas from Tolkien, Eddings, even Rowling and throw them together. Its not even literature what he's written. Characters are very disappointing, and I see absolutely no morale. But admittedly the plot is slightly interesting Probably the only reason why I read the books. I get into a frenzy when I dont know how something will end...[/quote]

Add George Lucas in there and you're done. The plot of Eragon is very similar to Star Wars, which would be why it's interesting, except that Star Wars did it first

*notes this would be the second Eragon thread but doesn't care anyway since it has a totally differen't discussion anyway*
^And Tolkien was the first to describe elves as tall and fair... before elves were short little people who helped Santa Clause or were little trouble makers in the woods. Tolkien redefined many things and gave fantasy it's deffinition, I think.
I both hate a like Eragon. Like, I'm not a completely crazy fan(with the exception of Murtagh who needs a little bit more character developement, though), but I'm not a complete hater either.
I agree with the Star Wars plot line... especially when it comes to the first book mostly. And I've found the way he uses his magic like a mental color thing... is alot like Tamora Peirce. Though, I haven't read any books from Rowling, Eddings, or Lucas(he wrote Star Wars? I've only seen the movies), so I wouldn't know anything about those books and the style of writting ect.
Yet, I like Eragon because his description and the fact there there is action, though Eldest is mostly school and politics.
One thing I think CP could add is comical relief.

I do think Paolini could be a good writer. But he needs to work on originality, and I think his characters need more flaws. By the end of Eldest, Eragon's practically invincible. I was really bummed when they made him all elf-ish, because it pretty much took away his last disadvantage. Invincible characters are really, REALLY boring. I also think he needs to deviate from the whole chosen-one-who-saves-the-world plot, do something a bit more interesting.
Actually, yeah, I hadn't noticed that his magic is a bit like Tamora Pierce's. Though I don't think that's so much of a plagiarization issue...magic is expressed in a lot of different forms.

Comical relief would be the only relief I would get from reading the books xDD
I never read Tamora Pierce, but as I said, originality could improve

And if you read the first "Wheel of Time" book, the plot beginning is almost the exact same. I'm sure I can find my original Eragon rant around here somewhere... it had all the plot points in it...

Heh, I've read all of WoT. Though I can't say I noticed the plot similarities then...they are similar, orphan farm boy raised by someone who isn't his father, dead mother, discovers he has to save the world...yep, pretty much...

Has anyone noticed that all these heroes are orphan? Luke Skywalker, Spiderman, Frodo, Harry Potter....

Oh yes. It's a plot device. They need something to propel them out into the world

Usually what starts a story is "What if..." but, now I see it's mostly "What if this orphan boy..." lol! Maybe CP could turn Orik into the comic relief... or the funny part is about how MS-ish Eragon is.
The third book's name is Brisingr? He broke his six letter word starting with an E tittle chain... But... I guess that goes to show how unimaginative CP is.
(sorry if that part was already discussed... I just looked on the Shur-tugal website after a long time)
