Yay! I've just seen the trailer for this film. :bounce: It looks very good, although admittedly if it was anyone else's film I probably wouldn't be looking forward to it (films about the destruction of the planet or putting humans in peril isn't normally my thing) but hey, it's M. Night Shyamalan and he has not steered me wrong yet. :D

Anyone else looking forward to it? :-)

Just saw the trailer too. Looks pretty darn good and with Mark Wahlberg, John Leguizamo, and Zooey Deschanel? I'm totally in. Totally, totally in.

I'm really excited about this one. His films never fail to amaze me.

*Minor spoiler possibility. I think.*

Apparently it's about the world's plants releasing a neurotoxin that causes anyone who contacts it to commit suicide in some terribly violent manner. Awesomeness.

Ok, well I got back from seeing it today, and frankly I loved it. :D

[spoilers ahoy]

I thought it was a pretty nifty storyline to be honest, and as long as you let your imagination go and allow the film to tell you the story, I don't see why so many people hate it. If you're expetcing it to be a scientific documentary then you shouldn't even have bought the tickets. It's no worse than some of the stories that are projected onto our TV and cinema screens.

And as always, M. Night tries to give his characters a little something. I don't know what it was about Mark and Zooey, but I just really liked them. Originally I thought "what's with her" and I didn't really like her, but then she grew on me and I liked the fact she had problems which she eventually overcame. Just like Mark was a bit of a geeky person, I like how he became stronger and more mature even as it went along.

I jumped an absolute mile though, when they were in the crazy woman's hosue, and Mark was examining the doll on the bed and she popped up behind him. I nearly had an accident.

Yeah, I really enjoyed it. Even if there wasn't a really happy ending.

SPOILERS AHOY---RESPONSES.

I really liked it, and even maybe a little disappointed because Shyamalan usually has a twist at the end but really, I loved it. I'm glad that even though it's rated R, it still focuses on storytelling and not the mature themes and graphic scenes. I fell in love with Zooey Deschanel, I had always been a fan of hers but her eccentric portrayal of Alma was just beautiful. She and Mark Wahlberg light up the screen.

I've always loved M. Night Shyamalan couples----ahhhhhhh Lucius/Ivy!! <3333 And I loved Elliot and Alma together. I was also psyched about Leguizamo (sp??) playing Julian, he played a pretty different character than normal and he did beautifully. I did get the feeling that he would end up dead though when he went off to Princeton.

Omg. That old lady----gah. She just scared the bejeezus out of me. Her mood switches so suddenly and it's scary. She was nice---she was just.... yeah. She was.... yeah.

I really, really, really cringed when the guy turned on the tractor and lay down in front of it. Gah.

Didn't realise there was a thread for this until today.

I really really really liked it. Everyone seemed really off kilter, which was great lol.
Zooey was just awesome.

It really gave me some genuine 'jump' moments when the cop shot himself and then everyone else did, depsite knowing it was going to happen. Hearing it off camera just gave me a real jolt, I was genuinely surprised as it can take a lot to get me to jump like that.

The old woman was batty to the max

I loved how the end was not all it seemed and the guy on the news was proven right.

I saw this film again yesterday, and I really, really liked it. Just as much as I did the first time I saw it.

I can understand why anyone dislikes a film I like, because everyone has a right to their opinions. But the level of hatred against this film, leads me to believe that 90% of the people who wished they'd shot themselves rather than watch this film, are not only extremely prejudiced against M. Night but they just have this weird vendetta against The Happening. The people on IMDB make me so angry with their views on The Happening, because they just pounce on everything from the acting to the directing to the actors eyebrows and it's just so annoying that people in general, seem to make fun of this film just because they can and with no kinda "well I disliked it because...". It's all they're right and everybody who likes it is wrong.

I also have this theory that films that films that show people getting killed or being killed in outrageous ways for comic values, are partly to blame why some people - and I was in a cinema audience where no-one laughed and no-one in my family laughed either - think it's hilarious everytime someone kills themselves. I don't frankly understand that. Story: people are attacked by a toxin that causes them to kill themselves; people then do themselves harm. I don't see the  moment there.

I've also heard that The Happening is too serious and there is no urgency. It may be me being thick, but I don't get that. I think the fact that the characters are treating the situation seriously is.. a good thing? By the fact people are being attacked by this toxin and for a better part of the film everyone is panicking and not understanding what is going on and trying to get to parts of the country where it is safe, is in fact showing there is urgency, and that there not all sitting at home drinking tea. And it may also be me, but if I was in that situatation where something was causing people to act weird and then kill themselves, then I would be treating it as a serious problem.

As for the acting, well I connected with the characters and if you actually read between the lines, you get to understand a lot about them. There are actually a lot of M. Night characters that you don't get everything about them spelt out for you, and you have to think about them and make your own conclusions. I thought everyone was good in this film, and as my brother has noted Mark Wahlburg can be a terrible actor at times, and this is one of his better roles.

The music was also very beautiful and haunting and it really worked well with the film.

So, yeah. I'm just pretty sick and tired of the bad reputation this filmsgets. I think most people, are just being snobbish and close minded. They judge everything M.Night has ever done on the Sixth Sense. Which is wrong. It's a film. Just watch it and go with it.

I never meant anyone on this forum Ellie. I was sure I had put somewhere about the people on IMDB and the kind of responses they make about everything to do with The Happening. There are a lot of snobbish people that lurk there, I would only expect people on here to have proper opinions and not just hate something because of who made it or they didn't like the title or whatever. All the points you made I have seen before (and expressed with much less intelligence), and much more which I don't think normal people would even mention, so I can see why you thought I was referring to you, but honestly, I had intended to make a specific reference to IMDB. And the kind of people in general who seemingly gave this film no chance. My brain worked faster than my fingers I think. ;)

ugh i hated that movie! it would have been better without the gore! it would have had the same impact. gore hadn't bothered me ever, until i saw this. i mean, that guy in that lion pen!?!? EW! it was pretty interesting idea, about plants killing humans b/c they were a threat. but ya, M. night has definitely had better movies. :( i was disappointed when i got all excited to watch it, then had to froward through that old lady part someone warned me about. and those kids getting shot. . .Gross.

I would really like to see this move again, just to see it from a predisposition of "I hate this movie." To see if there are alot of things that I might actually end up disliking, because I'm like JF. I really loved the movie and don't really understand why there's a massive audience who would love to, more than anything, conquer over the people who did like the movie.

I haven't seen The Happening but I've been wanting to. And I'm especially curious now because there's such hatred for this movie.

I personally loved The Village. I thought it was one of the most beautiful films I'd ever seen. And I know lots of people really hated it.

I think people [in general] over-analyze things WAY too much and everybody's trying to play movie critic. Who CARES about character development?! I always judge a film based on the entertainment factor. Either you like a film or you don't like a film. Everything else is irrelevant.

Pretty much, Eru! Well said. :) That's why there's so many different genres out there. Not everyone is going to like one type of movie, so just enjoy the movie you're seeing. You paid your money, now get what you can out of it! :)

I watched this movie on TV a few months ago, and liked it a lot. Not sure why it was panned so much by the critics (though that doesn't usually have any bearing on whether or not I see a movie, since I don't ever pay attention to professional film critics ;)).

I mean, what a fascinating idea! What if non-human organisms do have some sort of self-preservation mechanism in their genes, and being put under too much pressure by the human species acts as a catalyst for them to activate it? The results would probably be just as horrifying and confusing as they were in the film, and it would drastically alter our view of the organisms we share the planet with. I thought it was interesting that the people who were spared, so to speak, were those who had been paying attention to and had some knowledge of the toll humans are taking on the planet (Though I don't know why the guy who ran the greenhouse ended up being part of the body count. I'd think he'd be one of those most likely to survive the plants' "attack".). As for the gore, it wasn't the worst I've ever seen. Some of the scenes in The Mist were far worse. The acting, while hardly Oscar-worthy, was quite good, I thought.

^ I have to agree with you and Kit, and Eru.

I also think this film and all of M. Night Shyamalan's films after The Sixth Sense are going to suffer, because The Sixth Sense came first. It was original, clever and surprising. Most directors proceed upwards and then make their classics... some people think all he's done is gone backwards. While I think technically The Sixth Sense is probably his best film... it's not the most enjoyable and it's not my favourite, ergo I don't agree with them, and as he has satisfied my brain cells with every film of his I have seen, I enjoy his films and to be honest, it's the stories and the characters that get me not his directorial abilities... of which I wouldn't have a clue if he was good or not... so how can I make a judgement?

Ok, that was a mini rant, which probably didn't make much sense but nevermind. We all like what like and we're all entitled to our opinions... let the determined haters be happy with their cause. ;)
