Evening Star by Edgar Allan Poe
'Twas noontide of summer, And mid-time of night; And stars, in their orbits, Shone pale, thro' the light Of the brighter, cold moon, 'Mid planets her slaves, Herself in the Heavens, Her beam on the waves. I gazed awhile On her cold smile; Too cold— too cold for me— There pass'd, as a shroud, A fleecy cloud, And I turned away to thee, Proud Evening Star, In thy glory afar, And dearer thy beam shall be; For joy to my heart Is the proud part Thou bearest in Heaven at night, And more I admire Thy distant fire, Than that colder, lowly light.
-The End-
Good stuff Poe.

I remember one story with a ghost or a girl who was a vision, and appeared out of painting...I liked that one but forget the name...

I read A Tell-Tale Heart for school a couple weeks ago & loved it. It was SO good. I also love The Raven!! it makes me go squee inside! it has such a lovely meter:
Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. "'Tis some visitor," I muttered, "tapping at my chamber door- Only this, and nothing more."
if you haven't read the whole thing, READ IT. tis beauteous.

I LOVE "The Raven". It's probably one of my all-time favorite poems, if not THE favorite! I agree with Gilthoniel, it has such a lovely meter! I love the repeating of sentences and words.

Cowboysunset, I just read The Pit and the Pendulum today! It's a very good story... suspenseful and... umm, what's the word? Poe-ish. I haven't gotten around to reading Fall of the House of Usher yet though... But I read... The Masque of the Red Death, I believe it was, a few days ago. that one is really good! And there was another story... something like Ms. Found in a Bottle, I think. that one was just strange.
I've read A Tell-Tale Heart too... it was actually what got me started on his stuff.
hmmm, and I've probably read The Raven at some point... but I sure don't remember it. I'll have to again sometime though since all of you guys love it so much.
I just like that all of his stuff is eerie and you don't know how it'll end until it's actually over, you know? He had a unique style.

Thanks for posting the link PD. I had never read anything by Poe, but he has been on my must read list for a long time. I read The Raven, and as you all said, it's beautiful! Then I browsed his short pieces and read The Pit and the Pendulum, rather dark.. but intersting. I just prefer reading books.. that are book, not off the screen!
But so great to be introduced to Poe, thanks!

Ea, glad I could help you out. And I'm happy that you decided to finally give Poe a shot! He really is a unique, interesting writer... it's at least worth reading one or two of his stories. The Pit and the Pendulum was dark, but so intriguing... at least it kept my interest.
Aer, hehe, glad to see yet another fan.
hm, I've never read that one... but I shall have to someday. I know, that's what I like about all of his stories, they can all be interpreted differently depending on who you are. And they always end up surprising you. he was good with twists and interpretations and descriptions and weirdness. Some of his stories really draw you in. Btw, I actually read The Black Cat just today. I didn't know if it would be good or not, but it SO was! It was amazing! I loved how the black cat was like his conscience and it was so... Poe-y. you know? I can't really describe it other then that... but it held your interest because you wanted to know how the cat would tie into everything. And some of the wording struck me as funny... the way this cat tormented the man's very being and he was just terrified of it. Or maybe I'm just easily amused. Although what he did to the first poor kitty... *huggles it* the poor thing! But it makes you think... think about how people can change (he got involved with alcohol but I'm talking just in general, you know) and it makes you reflect on yourself even. Anyway, the story was kinda dark, but that's just Poe... over all, I would really recommend it.
