I did see the BBC series of P&P... and yeah, I wholeheartedly agree, Colin Firth = human candy!
So perhaps I should read S&S first, as a sort warm up for P&P :P

Oh yes, everyone seems to forget about S&S I think, because it's completely overshadowed by P&P, however I think it's just as good if not better than P&P. You should definitely read both though, Eä. :D

Jane Austen's novels are amazing! I've read P&P, S&S, and most of Emma.

Well as I've read all her novels and also her short stories, Lady Susan, Lesley Castle etc etc I would definitely recommend everyone to read them all. If you liked one of her books, you may as well go the whole hog and read 'em all as she didn't write *that* many.

My favourites are Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility and Emma, probably in that order. I ADORE the characters in S&S, but I think critically, P&P is the better book. It's is better written I think and is more witty. I love Emma because the heroine is completely different - wealthy, independent and very flawed.

Alright guys, you had me convinced.. I've started reading P&P... and then you should think everything was all happiness.. but I've encountered a serious issue... I'm not enjoying the novel like I should? I've read until the part where they are going to the ball at Netherfield.. and I'm quite upset about the fact that Austen doesn't spend enough time on her so-called heroine. I miss learning more of the personality, thoughts and feelings of Elisabeth.. and perhaps also Jane.. So far I'm feeling quite indifferent to the events.
What's wrong with me?!!! :P

You will learn more, believe me. Remember a TV series/film centres on character and feelings, because that's the only way people get to know a character, by characters talking to each other and letting the audience know what they think and feel. With books, it can be characters or the author that let the reader in on what a character likes or dislikes. With books, it takes a little longer sometimes, and the film in particular in some parts was quite different to the book, so there may be some scenes you are expecting, that won't appear.

JF: She has short stories? I never knew that! *goes off to look for them*

*feels slight relief at Gimli's comforting post*
Okay.. well, I'll be patient then.. I guess you're right on the movie vs. book thing, it's the same with LotR.. the book has other qualities than the movie because they are different medias. It's just difficult not to compare the movie when I have seen both the movie and BBC series and they seem to follow the book so close, almost scene on scene. :-)

Also, something that might distract my full attention from the plot is that I've got a copy with a lot of helpful notes that explain things and words from... 'back then', and I can't help but constantly flipping to the back of the book to read the notes, even when it's self-explanatory.

Anyway, thanks for the encouragement. It does seem - from your three-word description - like I may like Emma too though.

OMG yes! That is soooo annoying when they put those things in the back of books... it should be sealed and say something like "do not open until you've finished the book". I tended to keep flipping back, but I gave up as it didn't enhance my reading pleasure or teach me anything I *really* needed to know to understand so... I willed myself not too look. :P And I finished it much quicker.

I hope you like Emma. I know a lot of people find her character hard to like, but she's one of my favourites because she does have flaws, and that makes her very human in my eyes. And she does genuinely try to do good things for people, but at the same time, like all of us, she does sometimes willingly hurt people by something she says. But as a character she really grows, and learns a lot about herself, which is all you can ask for really in a character who isn't perfect. And Mr. Knightley is one of the sexiest characters in the Jane Austen world.

I had to read P&P for school, as well as Mansfield Park, and to be honest, I wasn't that impressed with her writing style. P&P was definitely better than the latter, but both seemed somewhat lacking. Though, granted, I'm not the type of guy to be interested by a book about, essentially marriage. ^_^

Anyway, I thought she did okay in P&P, though it wasn't as good as I had been led to believe, but in Mansfield Park, it seemed at first as though it was going to be really good, and then she compressed the ending into just a few short pages (in which a lot happened), which totally changed the feel of the book, and IMHO, kind of ruined it. (Note, this is just my own opinion, and I'm not trying to offend anyone with it or anything) So I'm kind of leery about reading another one of her works, just because I haven't been too impressed by hers so far.

Gimli, I'll take your advice and try to put an imaginary seal on the notes in the back then!! :P
And if it still doesn't work you'll have to walk me through the book.. I'll come here and complain and rant but I will finish it. I usually finish a book once I've started it! :-)
And Emma.. well, it depends on my opinion on P&P! ;-)

Wow, you've returned Aerandearest!!
Can we dare hope to be graced with thy most amiable company on a regular basis again or will the blessing only last over the summer?
Concerning your comments on Jane Austen.. well, you are a guy.. and her books are supposed to be favourising the majority of the female sex regarding the themes and plots. ;-)I was rather surprised to see you posting here, actually.. although, I do know other guys who've read Austen and watched the movies. In fact, I watched the BBC series of P&P with him on a marathon night... 6 hours straight with P&P!! :P

I could be wrong, but I believe Mansfield Park was not completed before she died, hence the reason why the basic story was still told to us, but not in the way Jane Austen would have liked.

Yes, precious... that page doesn't exist really, it's all in your mind.

Unfortunately, I'm actually going to be absent for most of the summer, Eä. :( I'm going to be around for another two weeks or so, and then I'm going to vanish again, until sometime (hopefully) towards or shortly after the end of summer. I very much hope it won't be any later than that that I'll be back, but we're moving in August, so I don't know.

Really? It wasn't completed before she died? That would explain the way that it was so....rushed. I mean, I didn't enjoy it very much, but the ending was far worse than the rest of the book, so that would make much more sense. Thanks for reassuring me, JF. ^_^

Who knows, perhaps someday I'll yield to popular opinion and put Emma on my book list. :)

Pity, Aerandear... I shall miss yu.. but at least it was great to see you again... :-) Take care.

Mansfield Park was actually mentioned in one of my texts on Intercultural Communication for its post-colonial content/theme. Interesting, now I can read it and still claim I'm reading for school, kinda like that idea! :P

Okay, I only had time to pick up P&P today because I've been suffocating in exams. We're still at Netherfield at the ball and the ackward Mr Collins is constantly hitting on poor Elizabeth so it almost makes me sick to read.. I mean.. we all know that he very soon will *shivers* propose to the poor girl...
