I daresay it's a strong example of the government wanting to take over the place of a parent. A parent should have the right to educate their child (or children) wherever they choose, whether it's in public school, private school or homeschool.

lol, what what you say. I agree with you, though. And the student should have a choice too, you know?

School ate my life. *sigh*

It wasn't actually a law. It was an appellate courts interpretation of the law that held major consequences.

A family was brought up on child abuse charges. They were told that they were mentally abusing their children. I don't know enough about the case to know if that charge could hold water. The family argued that they had a constiutional right to home school their children. The case was brought to an appellate. The court looked at CA code of education. The decided that not only did the family not have a constitutional to decide how to home school their kids, but the CA edu code declared that only someone with teaching credentials could legally teach. If this were the case then most forms of home schooling would be considered illegal. Please not, I've read the section of the code they were talking about. It doesn't say that. HSLDA(Home School Legal Defense) along with other homes school organizations worked to get the case reheard. The court granted the rehearing which threw out their previous ruling. The court has now unanimously voted to reverse their earlier decision. Needless to say, for those of us in CA it was a tense time.

As to TT question of when I'm starting school, I start sometime after labor day.

I guess you could say this: Thank God that CA didnt' pass a law. I'm sure that many people back at the beginning of this country homeschooled their own children, and see who some of them may have been *George WAshington*...who knows how many founding fathers were educated at home? I"m sure one or two of them were.

I don't know when I'm starting school. Our school districts in Texas start the 20th or the 25th for the most part. The school in my town starts the 25th; teachers start on the 20th. I kind of want to start when they do ; because it means the sooner I start, the sooner I can graduate. My mom is still waiting on a catalog from A Beka Book and then she'll have to order a few books. Most of mine are hand-me-downs though to save money...I think I've got most of mine, except for Spelling and maybe one or two other texts *i know some of what i have to take this year:*

Civics,
Economics,
Algebra 2
Consumer Mathematics,
Intro to English LIt and English Lit. *includes some work of c.s. lewis, yay!*
Spelling,
and I don't know what else....*sigh*

Hmmm... Don't rightly know what all I'm taking but here's what I remember...

Not really. It's about the same as taking all AP classes in public school.

ah, well I really dread English Lit. I had to read Julius Caesar sometime last year *why I was reading Shakespeare in 11th grade in World Lit. I have no idea* and while it wasn't exactly horrible, it's something I'd rather not re-read. I also had to read The Scarlet Letter in the second semester of 11th grade *I always have two literature books, one that's for part of the semester, then another that's for the last part of the semester; so I basically do two Lit. books in one semester*....I don't know if I have to read many novels; I was browsing through my English Lit. book and found that I have to read the entire book of Robinson Crusoe; but I didn't realize it was a Christian story, so maybe it won't be that bad!

I think the thing that worries me the most are my SATs, ACTs and all those tests to see if I can even get into college.

Sorry for not specifying about what stereotype I'm talking about. I was manly referring to the one I've gotten the most which is that homeschoolers are unsocial geeky nerds that sit around and do geometry just for kicks. Very much not true.

My views about the CA home-schooling law? Personally I am against large government and a law forcing parents to send their kids to a school they don't want them to be a part of is way over the line. I'm sure some of the politicians have good intentions in this matter but I believe they're uninformed and hasty.
Sorry for not reading all the posts, my reply may be missing some key elements but it's 2 am and I'm sort of tired.

I start school next Monday or Tuesday, whenever my books come in. My mom ordered them today so....I'm sorta excited to start. My mom told me that since I'm homeschooled and don't take the TAKS test I'll have to take one similar..I guess before I take the SAT or ACT.....

Ahhh, you guys all start soo soon. I'll start... erm, Sept 22.

I look at it as being: the sooner i start, the sooner I get all my SATs, ACTs and other tests done and the sooner I graduate!

did you know that we as homeschoolers have to take not just the SAT and ACT but a test similar to the TAKS test? My mom told me it was basically to see if I can read and write but I told her that I am very good at that already
