" no" Deawen said shaking her head with disintrest.
" I don't have 'Friends'. " she said "friends" as if it were foriegn and most taboo. "Having Friends is too dangerous. They can be used against you, thus not worth the trouble." she said casually, picking at a loose thread in her cloak.
"She looks like Fun, don't you think?" she asked eagerly.

Maethoriel was needless to say amused. It was not often that she was greeted by an alleged prisoner, she had other thoughts on that, and a healer. The mix brought a rakish grin to her face that would seem to any other completely random. But through her long years in Middle Earth she had learned to find the absurd in almost everything.

She shook the grin off her face and respond to Maenel, "Yes, a true healer to be sure. I admire tenacity miss..." she stopped, unable to remember the woman's name or if it had been given before hand.

"Fun, if you are the type to enjoy the ignorant, haughty, and cruel." He said in a low, angry tone. He glared at the ground. He wasn't the least bit amused my this elven woman, and the sooner she left to find new entertainment, the better. Fearan didn't want her polluting his air.

Then he realized what Deawen had said. "I don't have friends. Having friends is too dangerous."
"Deawen, friends can also help you. Find a good one and he or she will support you through anything. Its horrible to go through the world alone. So distant, so numb to others. Do you really not want a friend?"

Arandur was one the point of leaving on his self-appointed scouting mission, when he noticed the gathering near the healers tent he had left only minutes before.
"Not again," he muttered in exasperation. If Deawen had tried anything...

Resignedly he nudged his horse in their direction. Soon enough however, he saw that a stranger was the center of it. Two people broke off from the group and disappeared inside a tent as he approached, and only Maenel, the stranger, and a couple of curious guardsmen were left as he reined in in front of them. His eyes were calculating as he took in the disreputable appearance of the elf; she looked none to savory, and ripe for trouble if that was her bend.

"Hail, and welcome to our camp, friend," he said, stressing the last word. "We are on the point of marching, but there's food still from breakfast if that is what you seek."

He had stayed mounted when he spoke, knowing few would challenge a mounted man, and making use of the added authority of intimidation. There would be no misunderstandings here.

Deawen watch Fearan silently before answering. " It's not that I don't want a friend it's just that..." she frowned trying to mold her thoughts into words. "It's too dangerous to have friends, I mean.." Deawen sighed frustrated. " Yes it's horrible to live life alone, but it's also horrible to know that because you befreinded someone they were killed because of you. It's not worth the pain."
Her voice broke slightly as she spoke. But Deawen wasn't one to show hurt readily.
She heard Arandur outside but she couldn't understand what he said. " When you are a phantom you don't have friends." she whispered mainly to herself.
" Why don't you like the elf?" she asked changing the subject.

The half-elf supressed the urge to chuckle. So much distrust, it was amazing how a little dried blood and old scars went such a long way. She took stock of the newest memeber to join, made a few observations on his look and demeanor and dubbed him interesting, but assuredly no threat.

Maethoriel did chuckle however at the mention of friendship, "Friends? My dear sir, that is a bit presumptuous. You have only just laid eyes on me, and I you, let us reserve that title for later. You may hand it out freely, but I do not," she replied calmly, still leaning uncaringly on her cane.

She nodded to herself, "Aye, breakfast would be nice, to be sure. Tell me, from where do you ride? Not part of the Rohirrim for sure, you are not quite tall or bulky enough, one of Aragorn's men, then?" She worked through her words to where they did not seem so much a question, but her thought process ending on a sure statement.

Coolly, he said, "Presumptuous? No, I was merely politely informing you that I don't trust you. But I think it is my turn to ask the questions," he looked her up down, making his look as disparaging as possible; two could play at that game. He smiled inwardly, but let not a trace show.

"Where I hail from is irrelevant. Where you are from, on the other hand, is a different matter entirely. We are at war, so naturally I mistrust strangers. What is your business here, elf?" He said, directly.

She shrugged and waggled a finger, "My, my, little Estel needs to teach his subordinates how to be a little less blunt. And calling one a friend hardly suggests feelings of distrust. Learn well the art of speech, lad," she smiled and held out her gloved hand as if inspecting the hidden nails beneath.

"Half-elf, actually," she corrected automatically.

"You are at war? Hardly, tracking down a few rogue orcs and wargs is not war," she respondly sharply, "it is child's play. However, you could correctly say that you were at battle. My business? Actually, none," she responded truthfully, with a small shrug. "Just saw the camp, smelled the blood, thought I might investigate. As for my home, it is no longer in existence, fell to a few brigands many thousands of years ago."

(Ah! So fast!)
She waited a beat before responding. "Maenel." She went to her personal part of the larger medic tent and sat on her cot. She listened to Deawen speak with Faeran for awhile. So Deawen caused the death of someone dear to her. She contented herself with that and let her mind wander away from the conversation, to its familiar, desolate paths.

"Little Estel?" Arandur grinned. "Doubt many people would call him that." He dismounted, a tacit sign of friendship in itself. "I apologize for my bluntness, been on edge lately, what with the ambush and all."
He held out a hand, "they call me Arandur," he said depreciatingly.

"Maenel," she repeated to herself, commiting the name to memory.

"You would be quite surprised how many do in Rivendell. I doubt Lord Elrond's sons would be able to call him anything but."

She chuckled and took the offered hand grasping it firmly with a nod, "Pleased to meet you. Yes an attack on one's life tends to put one ill at ease. So it seems. Well, in any case I am no threat, Arandur."

"Why don't I like her?" Fearan asked. Perfect. Now he had to put his feelings into words. "The way she just sauntered into camp like she owned it, that I admire. It takes guts to stand up like that. But the rest of her...It's really how she referred to battle as entertainment, like it was a great spectacle to be enjoyed, because its not. People die in battle, your own commrades, friends. Its not to be taken lightly. Every time you kill somebody, you're not killing just a person. You're killing someone's wife, some one's father, someone's son. There is no enjoyment in it at all, nor should there be.

I guess I just despise those that think of killing as a sport. Its like she thinks of us as pawns, as somthing for her own amusement. We're not." He risked a glance at Deawen. "And I don't want you to end up like her. You're headed down her path, one with petty, weak relationships, where you've been alone for so long you won't remember how to connect with others. And that's such a horrible, numb feeling that you'll endlessly search for somthing, anything, that can make feel again, even if its horrible and grim. I-...you're too good for that, Deawen, you deserve better. I guess that...well...What I want to say is that you will always be my friend. I'll let you choose if you want to return the friendship."

Deawen remained perfectly still through Fearan’s words, ( Like a deer in headlights lol) "...well...What I want to say is that you will always be my friend. I'll let you choose if you want to return the friendship." Deawen's head tilted to the side in concentration. She wasn't sure she heard him right. No she heard right, her face went pale but she remained silent for a long time.
"But I am a prisoner, and I've only known you a few days....you don't even trust me.. " she stopped and her brow knitted together. She was suddenly mistrustful, fearing it was a ploy to get her to give information.
Her emotions suddenly vanished from her face, her eyes went blank and she with drew inside herself.
" How do I know this isn't a trap?" She asked her voice void of all emotion. She was suddenly very frightened.
