I must say that I actually like Fëanor because I have pity on him. He used to be good, but was misled by Morgoth, and, therefore, is seen as a negative character. You probably don't agree with me, but I have mercy on him because he went through so much, not all of it being his fault, and was judged harshly by Mandos for it. As James 2:12 clearly states, "Mercy triumphs over judgement!"

Unfortunately my database of quotes isn't available at the moment however it is said somewhere that the corruption of Feanor was Melkor's worst evil! Strange I know but it says that Feanor, as greatest of the Children of Iluvatar, could have gone on to do marvels in the world and for the Valar. Thus Melkor corrupting one with so much potential, earned this deed number 1 postion as the worst.

I would have thought the 'making' of the Orcs or the slaying of the Two trees would be a better choice but there you go.

yeah I wouldn't have thought that corrupting Feanor would be the worst deed Morgoth did, because I'd consider the harm he did to Arda by hurting it (especially slaying the two trees) a lot worse.
But then, without Feanor disobeying the Valar and going to Middle-Earth many wars and the slaying of many elves and men might've been prevented. But of course we can't know for sure what would've happened. But if Feanor and his people has stayed in Valinor in peace the history of Middle-Earth would be a lot different.

Quote:
Pah. I don't like him at all. He caused immense destruction and sorrow to come upon the Noldorin elves. He caused a lot of damage that would otherwise not have been, and he didn't do much himself to bring down Morgoth. He abandoned Fingolfin, killed many of the Teleri and stole their ships, and all because he wanted to be the only one with the Silmarils.

Exactley my reasons. I HATE( xinfinity) Feanor.

Why all the hate? You have to remember this guy had a lot going on. Morgoth killed his father whom he loved dearly and stole his greatest achievment, his home was in darkness, and from his point of view the valar weren't doing anything and Morgoth had been busy sowing lies and mistrust among the elves. Yes he did challenge his brother, :argue: but he also asked forgiveness from him. I don't think he was 'evil' he just had a firey spirit. . I love him.

Don't forget leaving his wife and killing an entire city over a few boats. Oh, and abandoning his brothers and thier families.

There's a lot about Feanor that I like, and a fair amount that I don't. I think mainly because of his passion for valor-like beauty in the silmarils leads him away from the true Valor. I think he was highly misled, and honestly (as with everyone else) if he hadn't been messed with by Morgoth he would have been one of the greatest elves, if not the greatest. He's brilliant, but his quest to be better really was his downfall... classic good/evil character--the quest for good leads him to wrongdoing.

basically it's all Morgoth's fault. As usual. *rolls eyes* Why couldn't he just play nice??

(gosh, I sound like I just came from class!! haha)
:-D

Feanor's character confuses me more than all others... he's not a character I like very much.. but at the same time I don't hate him
there is respect for his talent and intelligence.. and there is a little anger at his cruelty..
I just can't answer in a yes or no

I like Fëanor, but just not everything that he has done. He's proud like any Noldor, and arrogant which is just another part of his pride. The Silmarils were his greatest creation and he was proud of them, sure. I honestly think he had every right to go after what was stolen from him, I just think that he did not choose his words as carefully as he should have when swearing his oath, for he was angry at the time, over the fact his jewels were stolen and that his father, Finwë was slain and no one thinks clearly when they're angry. I admire is fiery spirit, but it burned a little too hot within him. I also don't think he should have brought his sons into the matter. While I know they were willing to stand at their father's side and follow his oath, some were less willing then others but I think only had done so, for they wanted to please father.

I think what is meant by that corrupting Feanor was Morgoth's greatest evil is that a) if Feanor hadn't been the way he turned out, Telperion and Laurelin could've been saved. Even barring that, think if all the trouble the Silmarils caused. Elwe was slain because of the dwarves' lust for the Silmaril. Countless people died because of Feanor's sons' quest to get them back from Morgoth. Maedhros and Maglor didn't even enjoy them after they had them and ended up getting rid of them. And b) If it all hadn't happened, Feanor would've gone on to do greater things and the history of Arda would have been even more rich.

Still, I don't know if I liked Feanor. I didn't like his attitude but given the circumstances? It's not like this was a time when he could be totally rational or anything. And he was the reason for the entire war...but then again if he hadn't been around there would be no story for the Silmarillion to chronicle! XD. I don't know.
