It's kind of like saying a male dog is petite... the ord petiet actually means small... (ogs are small)

But you have to keep in mind the context of the race and factor in the fact that that IS masculan for an elf. :)

I do not share the same idea with most of you. If people say that Legolas is sissy, I believe Orlando did a great job in portrayal of Legolas. Even though I did not read the books, I can tell that this way of portayal depicted how a male elf is mainly in Tolkien's books. I believe that it is merely a stereotype because it is easy to make fun of things. I mean in my county there is a common belief that if a man wears an earring in his right ear, that means he is gay but it goes no further than a stereotype. In addtion, why care about Legolas being depicted so sissily, I mean so what? if this is what people do, it is a cheapshot ,assuming that people had not read the books or not looked up anything related to Tolkien material.

I believe since I love fantasy themed books, I would say let go, let people have fun. Go with the flow if you can. Accept people as they are.

Well the, read the books... PJ made him look like a dumb blonde, definitely not how Tolkien described him.

I think Legolas (as are most Elves) are just mysterious and aloof, their minds are always a million miles away. The modern idea of a perfect man is a man in the hear and now, concentrating on the project at hand and getting the job done, so, the audience would most naturally have walked into the theaters with that context, and gotten it wrong.

People who think Legolas was sissy in the movies just didn't read into the story and the culture that the Elves have, most movie fans got it, and I mean the movie fans who were fanned so much their still here, lol, the book fans obviously knew the back story, and Legolas, from reading the books 100+ times, :P

I think the best way to have cemented more understanding of the Elves in the movies would have to have been more of Sam's wonder at the Elves, not just a "Oooh look, their different to us," but more of a "These people are definitely a cut above the rest."

Yes, I think the general perception of movie-Legolas is that he was a sissy-pretty boy, at least among the immature and imagination-challenged. Some people just see long blonde hair on a guy rather than a member of a superior race. And I don't think it's just Legolas. Similar stuff comes up if you search for pictures of Glorfindel and other male elves, Legolas just bears the brunt of it because he's the most prominent elf in the movie.

Personally I liked Orlando's portrayal of Legolas, even if I think his role in the movie was a bit superficial. If I have a problem with PJ's direction, it's that he used Legolas so blatantly as eye-candy! There are so many pointless, out of place Legolas close-ups throughout the movies it drives me crazy sometimes. I would have been much happier if instead of a bunch of random shots he had actual lines to say that contributed to our understanding of the story or the decision of the Fellowship. But I suppose what he lacked in lines or wit he made up for in shield/mumakil trunk surfing. ;)

I love that image.

Exactly. Those who aren't thinking in a mature way that it's not meant to be sissy only see it that way. Yes, it's fun to pull a joke every now and then, as is with any character. But what bothers me most is not the jokes, but that people hate on his character because they only see it as sissy and girly. They don't even attempt to understand the race of the Elves and just are content with making fun.

I don't like that people hate on Orlando about it, either. He acted with what he was given, and sometimes what he was given just wasn't right. Saying that Elves don't know death or don't feel the cold? Who told him that? Yes, they're immortal and yes, they have clothing that is unique and awesome; but that's just wrong. But if you consider his acting upon what he was told, he did a pretty good job.

Yes, I know that a huge part of the responsibility is given to the actor, and I'm still not quite happy with the Legolas in the movie. I've learned to accept it, though. Some bits are not what I imagined, but some are exactly right. I also remind myself that Orlando just got out of drama school with this role, and I can see obvious improvement in his more recent works.

^^^ I hadn't actually heard that about Elves not feeling cold as humans do-- thanks! Where did you read/hear that? I still do think saying they can't feel the cold is a bit much (I always cringe when he says that on commentaries), but you've softened me on that a little bit.

Also, you've helped me understand an elf's portrayal on human death more. I knew they could be brought back and whatnot, but I guess someone putting all this in writing helped. Once again, I still think him saying Elves don't know death is far-fetched-- even though after they die they can be brought back, it's still at times countless years and/or ages before that happens, and Elves would suffer from a seriously prolonged absence as much as any human! But once more you've helped soften my opinion of his portrayal. So, thanks! :)

But yes, I see what you're saying about what movie-Legolas says. In the books he does talk quite a bit more than the film (not so much when the Fellowship first starts out, but more when they separate and as the story goes on). I also didn't like the drinking scene in the EE of RotK... in the Hobbit, his wood elves get drunk on wine, and in the books at Isengard he actually asks for wine... So yes, what he says (or lack of it) does still bother me. But not enough to hate the character.

And I for one never ever found his movements to be 'sissy' or whatever you could call it-- I liked the way he ran/moved because he was supposed to move that way! I didn't even notice how nice his hair was until people started joking about it! :P And even now it doesn't bother me, because some people just have nice hair. And you have to remember that this is the movies. Does anyone ever criticize their favourite tv show stars when THEY never have a hair out of place? ;)
