Yeah, I'm back, again, again, again, again.

I really have no idea how many times I've slunk back here...

Anyhoo, what with the Hobbit and all I am really going to try to make an effort to stick around more.

But my most important piece of news is that I've finally read The Silmarillion! :kick: 5/6 years of trying and I've finally managed it!
Something has clicked in the past fortnight. I've always struggled with Tolkien. It took me until I was 14/15 to finally read LotR (I'd been trying since I was 10) and even after that I still struggled with it. In fact, I've only ever read it all the way through twice. Because for the past 5 years I've started to re-read it get to the end of book 3 (which is my favourite part - Ents, Rohan, need I say more? ), turn over the page and it's Frodo and Sam. And I realise that I've got to read the same timespan again but this time Frodo and Sam before I can get to book 5 and Gondor. So I tend to give up.
And as for the Sil... I've been trying ever since I read LotR for the first time but really, really, really struggled with it. Even reading along with the audiobook I only managed to get to page 150 or so.

But last week I decided to have a re-read of the Hobbit because I'd been looking at the film stuff on the internet. Read it in a couple of hours. Then the next night I picked up LotR and I read it in 3 days (reading from about 10pm until 3am or so (I don't really sleep :p)). Got the Silmarillion and I read it over the weekend.
I have no idea how or why but finally something has clicked and my dyslexia isn't hindering Tolkien anymore.

Anyhoo, sorry for the essay. When I finished the Sil I felt like the moment deserved fireworks and champagne but all I could do was go to sleep.. So, instead, I'm gushing all over the internet about it...

So, I'm going to try to stick around a lot more now.

Its good to see all you lovely people again! :laughbounce:

Welcome back, Hravan :) And congrats on finally getting through Silmarillion :D It's not an easy one, even for those of us who have no reading challenges. Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy all the books even more now! Next up: Children of Húrin ;)

Thanks! :D

yeah, I actually forgot to mention that I started the Children of Húrin last night.

My reading list currently looks like this:
The Children of Húrin.
Unfinished Tales.
Tales from the Perilous Realm.
Book of Lost Tales part 1 and part 2.
The Letter of J.R.R. Tolkien (I'm getting it for Yule along with the Tolkien Audio Collection. :D )
The Peoples of Middle-earth.
The Lays of Beleriand
All four volumes of the History of the Lord of the Rings.

Then I just need to buy books 4, 5, 10 and 11 and I will have all of the HoMe. And then the Monster and the Critics and the other similar books.

I also have a Tolkien biography and a book about The Inklings to get through.

I have just over a year until the world ends ( :p ) so I'm using that as an excuse to make 2012 the year where I go completely crazy with Tolkien.

My reading list looks something like that, too. Unfortunately Norwegian bookstores don't seem to think that some of Tolkien's less famous works deserve a place on their bookshelves, so I haven't been able to get them yet. I will someday, though! :)

*sings* Amazoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon

The only books I can get from Waterstones in town (since the independent bookshop closed down a few years ago due to online competition and Waterstones (I actually got my copy of the Lays from them )) are the Hobbit, LotR, the Sil, Children, possible Tales from the Perilous Realm and Unfinished Tales and very, very, very occasionally the Book of Lost Tales.

Although most of those I actually got from charity or secondhand bookshops. The only brand new books I got are the Tales from the Perilous Realm (Xmas present), the Legend and the Peoples. And my copy of the Lays, while brand new, has the title page missing so I got it for £2.
Everything else is secondhand. And the only ones I got from amazon are the Tolkien biography and the Inklings and those were used copies.

But yeah, every time I go into a bookshop, whether new or secondhand/charity, I always try to find the Tolkien books first. That's how I've managed to get a first edition copy of the Silmarillion. Got it from a charity shop and they hadn't realised that it was a first edition so I got it for a few quid. It's not in perfect condition (actually I think somebody has spilt candle wax on it at one point ) but I still have a first edition Tolkien book! :D

I've given up hoping that I'm going to get the other books I want from the local shops though. Both secondhand shops in town have a list of the books I want and will send me an email if they get a copy of them (and if they remember about me :p ) and I regularly go ask in all the charity shops if they have any Tolkien books but I haven't had any luck for over a year now. :(
So I think I'm just going to have to order the rest from amazon marketplace or brand new from amazon.. (With some of them even the cheapest used copies are only about £1 cheaper than a brand new copy from amazon so I just get it new.. )

Seriously, check out amazon.co.uk. I know someone who lives in Sweden and I know a couple of people from Norway on another forum and they all use amazon.co.uk. If you spend over £25 (on amazon stuff, not marketplace) then you will get free delivery. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/custome ... Id=1204872

I know :) Only, if I spend more than about £21, I have to pay that amount in taxes to receive the package, which makes it quite a bit more expensive than I'd like it to be. Next time I go to the UK/US though, I'm gonna go into every bookshop I see to try and find Tolkien books ;)

Welcome back and congrats on reading the Sil! A tip that could help you stay interested would be to skip around and read the stories that are interesting to you and save the boring ones for last.

Welcome back Hravan. Congrats on finishing the Sil.. I remember it being a tough read the first time because it doesn't read as easily as LotR but I liked the perspective it gives, nevertheless. :-)
