You have an open mind though. Which is a good thing.

Arwen the webmaster wrote: Can I join? I've grown to like a lot of power metal in the past few months Been listening to DragonForce, Power Quest, Kamelot, Stratovarius, Rhapsody, Luca Turilli, Freedom Call, and Angra. And, of course, Nightwish <3 I'm not sure if anyone has ever read the "Rules of Power Metal" - they're quite funny Take a look @ http://z14.invisionfree.com/Femme_Metal ... wtopic=763 . Those rules are so awesome!!LOL Quote: Hansi is god
I like this one most
And I already planned to do a project about Blind Guardian and The Lord Of The Rings lol
not to mention that I listen to the "Nightfall" album MORE than once a week... at least once a day! (don't wanna be in a band, though... )
@Magick: Death Metal is quite cool, but to be open for new styles is good, too
My fav. Power Metal band is definately Blind Guardian.

Being open to new styles was what got me more into Power Metal and more recently Folk/Pagan/Viking metal.
When I was younger I was quite closed off to other styles of Metal. Now I just listen to pretty much anything in the Metal bracket. With a few exceptions (Nu/Mallcore)

They have music samples on there Media section.
I'll see if I can give a brief explanation of a few metal sub-genres.
Power: Big powerful vocals, lyrics steeped in fantasy.
Thrash: Super fast guitar work, aggressive vocals and lyrical content.
Speed: Much the same as thrash, just a bit more technical in the playing.
Death: Grunting vocals, morbid lyrics, aggressive fast playing.
Black: Heftier grunting, even more morbid lyrics, bad production on music.
Doom: Slow, methodical playing, introspective, often depressing lyrics, low vocals.
Folk: Basically trad folk music mixed with various types of metal.
Symphonic: Much like Power Metal, but more heavily tinged on the operatic side of things.
Now my brains turned off. I'll give a few examples of each one I've posted.
Power: Lost Horizon, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody(in Fire), Kamelot
Thrash: Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel, Early Anthrax.
Speed: Most thrash bands fall into this catrgory as well..but the top of the Speed metal list would be Megadeth
Death: Carcass, Arch Enemy, Deicide, Obituary
Black: Impaled Nazarene, Burzum, Emperor, Immortal, Mayhem.
Doom: My Dying Bride, Anathema, Cathedral, early Paradise Lost
Folk: Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Tyr, Moonsorrow
Symphonic: Nightwish, Epica, Leave's Eyes.
There are bands that crossover and are harder to pin down. But I'm just generalising to give you a slightly clearer idea.

@LDM/coughy:
Blind Guardian are a German band from Krefeld (Nordrhein-Westfahlen), they very often write songs about LOTR, in 1998 they published an album called "Nightfall In Middle-Earth", which is completely about the Silmarillion. Leadsinger and songwriter Hansi Kürsch himself is a huge Tolkien fan, (his fav. books are LOTR and the Silmarillion and his greatest hobby is reading lol) and writes lyrics about many different fantasy stories (e.g. Peter Pan/Finding Neverland [yes, it's a metal band], Dragonlance, The dark Tower ect. but also about religion and history ect.) An orchestral album is planned for 2007/2008 which will be completely about LOTR (*can't wait*)
They published two demos under the name "Lucifer's Heritage", but changed their name into Blind Guardian because ppl thought they played death metal (because of the "lucifer" in the name) which they didn't so, yeah...
Last year drummer Thomen Stauch left the band and Frederik Ehmke is the new drummer . Other members: André Olbrich ( guitars, also writes songs, together with Hansi Kürsch), Marcus Siepen (guitars) and Hansi Kürsch (lead and backing vocals ;used to play bass, head of the band)
(need more information???)
On September 1st they'll release their new album, "A Twist In The Myth".
The world tour starts a few days later...
What else can I think of?
Ah, yeah:
An interview about the new album:

And a few music videos ect.:

(Mirror Mirror Is from the Nightfall album)

Same. Well...rather I didn't have access or knowledge of 'other styles' of metal. And noooo Nu Metal.
A round of mead-ladden horns for the lot of us! In commemoration of this club's renewal!! (Blasts Dragonland)
WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! (Ok, I'm not THAT fast in real life. The average time between chords, for me, is quite slow. Notes, a little faster, but needs sever improvement )

I just 'discovered' a Symphonic Power Metal band named Dark Moor. They sent me an add request on MySpace, I decided to check them out and found them to be pretty awesome! They even left me a comment back on my profile!

Thank you Phoenix... and allow me to ask the same here. What bands would define or be representatives for Power Metal?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_power_metal_bands a list of all Power Metal bands
Power Metal is a very epic sub-genre of Metal. The music and lyrics are often very Fantasy based (often about Dragons and such). We loves that very much

Hehe Wiki is really your friend, huh!
I wonder what all those other sub-genres are like... Viking metal sounds cool... glam metal and... and... folk metal!!! Troll metal, rapcore... those sound quite amusing!!
