Then there's just the civilizations that don't see people, they see gold plated opportunities to land grab.

*points at Germanic tribes*

The abolishing of the Western Empire pretty much cemented my distaste for the histories of the Germanics. I still feel like strangling Odoacer....

Ooo are we talking about the Barbarian tribes that "sacked" the Roman empire?

There's this really awesome documentary that just came out this year, might not be out in the States yet because it was made for British tv, and it's called the Barbarians. And it talks about how the "barbarians" really weren't that barbaric at all and a lot of what we learn in school is Roman propoganda. It's so good, I wish I could get a hold of a copy :annoyed2: .

^ Well, that's my problem, too. So much to do for school!

Anyway, I need to check this club more often. In school we only have one history lesson per week, and in this lesson we don't even learn about history anymore, but about the government... :(

Well from what little I've gathered on the Huns and Vandels, they were quite interesting peoples. The Vandels were not actually a very violent group of people. When they took Carthage from the Romans, they walked in during a festival of sorts and took over the city with basically no bloodshed and they continued to send grain to Rome after they took it over. (Carthage was an important agricultural city to the city of Rome, they used to grain to feed poor people in the citiy.) Also when they "sacked" the city of Rome they did so with very little bloodshed or destruction, they just looted and took things, such as gold, statues, etc, back to Carthage with them.

Yes, I find that interesting. In the first civilization of Ancient Greece they believed that, but no one was worse than China. They called themselves the Middle Kingdom and believed that they were the center of the universe, literally. They also thought that any "non-barbaric" lands were a part of their empire. And as you said, they thought that anyone from any other civilizations were barbarians. Sorry, sort of babbling- sometimes I simply cannot stop with history. *shuts up*

China still isn't a great power, per se, at least not militarily. America's military budget still dwarfs China's.
