"If someone does undergo surgery, will that mean they will 100% recover?" Karina asked, "besides from the trauma that they will have gone through?"

"Of course," Marvilan said. "There's a week of therapy afterwards to make sure you are in control of your mind. They inject you with anesthesia during the surgery. The poor chap only died because he committed suicide from the shock of his behaviors while under the influence."

Feyl shook his head. The "I" of a person was not in the brain--their spirit resided in their body, yet at the same time it was not actually a part of it. Those of his people who practiced darker magic had developed ways of removing a person's spirit from their body, yet for some reason the Gohl were able to elude their spells, though considering that there had been a small battle going on, it was hardly surprising. Regardless, though, if the spirit existed outside and inside the body simultaneously, it could hardly be affected by simple surgery. Apparently, the Bekaran attempt hadn't gone as well as they had thought. Most likely the Gohl had merel wanted to avoid them actually succeeding, and had killed its host, and thus itself as well.

"Do not bring any paralyzing substance, Marvilan," Feyl cautioned. "Should you yourself be possessed, you could destroy any chance of this mission's success if you have it. At least without it you will be less of a threat to us."

It was an odd quest, really. Every person in it was a potential aid, and almost as greatly a potential threat. Any one of them could ruin any chance of the peaceful existence of Adaris if they were possessed, yet they were chosen regardless, to protect him, who would most likely die anyways. What would they think of that, when it happened?

Marvilan sighed. The price you pay for dealing with people who believed lightning was magic and the world's flat. He thought. "You don't honestly think the Bekerans are as thick as that, do you?" Marvilan asked. "As soon as we found out about the true nature of the Gohl's assault on the brain, we implanted biological vats inside everyone that was fighting against them that will dissolve once the brain realises that the identity is not in control. These vats contain paralysis toxins, that will immediately paralyse the subject. And if you still doubt us, bring us a subject whose mind is influenced by the Gohl. And we will perform the surgery in full view of the world."

Nolani was intrigued, but unsure. Could it really be that simple? Ferl, the one who had brought every one here for this mission, the one who was going to fix the problem, didn't know about this cure. The Belkeran were intellegent, that was for sure, but was this just wishful thinking?
Threng on the otherhand shuddered. He didn't like the mention of surgery: he believed that what the body had sealed up should stay sealed up. He wasn't even sure what the surgery was about. The best way he could understand it was to relate to experiences he had. The Gohl were beavers. The dammed up the brain, which in turn grew stagnant and smelly. The surgery cleared out this dam? He left the though behind. He wouldn't need it. Nolani was the thinker of the two. She proved this as she asked
"How does the paralysis tank know the toxin? A toxin? Is that all the Gohl are? They are smater then that, I am sure."

"No, no, no," Marvilan said. "Toxins are chemicals. They can't reproduce. They can only destroy. I never said that the Gohl were a toxin. I said they were like a virus. A virus can infect cells, reproduce. The paralysis tanks reads the information transmitted by the identity and they familiarize it. Once it reads that the information is foreign, they will dissolve."

"And other diseases that may affect the brain? Won't they too be recognized as forien?" She asked, intrigued. While she wasn't quite sure she agreed, she had to admit it was interesting.

"Well, we've discovered, analysed, cured, and destroyed over five hundred thousand diseases that exist in our world," Marvilan said. "We've analysed another five thousand and none of them blocks the identity source and brings a new one. Essentially what a virus does is infect a cell and replicating the virus. It doesn't take over the mind. The damage from the virus takes over the mind, yes. If you lose enough brain cells, you will go mad but that's not the case."

"I say we bring the paralysis injections. It would be much safer than being without it." Karina spoke up. She wasn't fully comprehending the effects of the Gohl but she understood onething, they were bad. There wasn't a cure that would not side track them, but still, a cure is a cure. "I say we proceed with the mission with what we have. We figure out the finer details later if the occasion should arise.

....at this point, Caunion, it's better for the plot if there is no actual cure to save a possessed person.

-----

If the paralyzing substance only attacked a specific substance, would it really be that bad to take it along on the journey? It could, maybe, prove to be of use, even if--regardless of what the Bekaran said--it wouldn't save someone from being possessed by a Gohl.

"Very well, you may bring the substance along," Feyl said, starting to feel a little irritated at Marvilan's patronizing tone. It wasn't as if they were stupid or anything--well, maybe the Laude weren't as intelligent as the others, but that was besides the point. He himself had a greater understand of Bekaran technology than Marvilan probably realized. So many of their kind grew haughty because of their advanced technology, never realizing that the Kor'daera didn't have it because they didn't need it. They could do almost anything with magic. As for the Bekarans' faster modes of travel, his own people certainly didn't want such damaging things on their own plane of existence. Developing them would cause far too much damage to the land, even if once they were produced they were still environment-friendly.

No, Bekarans were not as smart as they thought they were. Just because humans didn't want the technology, and Laude couldn't quite understand it, did not make the high-tech species any better than the other.

Feyl snorted--here he was, in the middle of planning for possibly the most important quest in the history of Adaris, and he was fuming at Bekarans. Still, it was difficult to keep a trace of irritation out of his voice when he spoke again.

"So, since we are bringing the paralyzing substance along, does anyone else have anything to say?"

Karina shook her head and sat up a little straighter.

"I have something so say," Garex said moodily, with a pointed glare at everyone in the room - the source of which remained unknown. "Can we go now?"

Aedhon knew his taciturn Guardian trusted the members of this council about as far as he could throw them, which, putting into consideration the almost-robotic Bekaran, didn't look very far. His sentiments matched Garex's at the moment - he wanted some time to lock himself up in his room and think. In the space of an hour he'd just been told that the end of the world was inevitable, then something entirely different an instant later.

For someone like Aedhon, who'd much rather stay in the comfort and security of Kor'da'this than go waltzing off to his death, it was all quite a handful.

(There's the suicide thing. Perhaps I didn't explain it clearer. All the paralysing agents do is paralyse the subject. There was nothing about curing. They have to operate on you to cure you. And my character explained that they couldn't bring the surgery equipments or the nanobots.)

Marvilan decided what he should do. He didn't wish to tell them that he was already implanted with the paralysis vats. He attached a transmitter that is wired to his brain. Should the paralysis vats dissolve, release the toxin, and incapacitate the brain, a signal would be sent to home base to alert them of his situation. With any hope, the Bekerens would come, transport him to the hospital where the surgery will take place. He brought toxins in case anyone wanted to use them. "Yeah first of all," Marvilan said. "Who here wants to be paralysed in case of infection." He hated the word possession. It sounded so archaic. "You won't have a say once you get infected."

Karina raised her hand. "I think I've already said but I'd rather be safe than sorry. So, yes, I would like to be paralysed if the occasion should occur that I am...posessed.

Threng wasn't sure of himself, but he spoke up. "And what of their bodies?" He asked. "Wern't thier bodies mentioned? These things are much more than a..a..virus."
