I have to admit, I didn't like Theoden in this movie either. I understand that he had come out from under Saruman's power and was trying to make up for lost time leading his people, but his behaviour seemed to be out of order in my opinion. *shrugs* My opinion only!

Well, it is not only your opinion, if you read the book Theoden obviously handled things better, said more realistic things, and was generally a nicer person!

one thing I'm glad the movie changed was Theoden's death. I was really disappointed when I read about his death in the book because I'd already seen the movie, and him not knowing that Eowyn was there really didn't cut it. The first time I saw the movie I was so delighted that EOWYN had killed the Witch-King [so dramatic!], because it seemed impossible to kill him. I couldn't believe that Theoden didn't realize it was his OWN NEICE that saved him.
...that took a really long time to say something that wasn't really that hard to explain

It certainly was sad when he thought he'd never see Eowyn again and she was right there!

I feel bad about some of the things in the movie too but it is what it is. I think we are much richer for it even with all its flaws. It was a daunting task to undertake and I'm not sure perfection was attainable....I mean, I'm sure it wasn't.
There are so many moving moments in the movie and in some places, like Boromir's death, it is really fleshed out to include what is there in the book but unspoken. Come to think of it, just seeing Boromir's death (and Theoden's) makes the movie worth it.

Yeah I agree. I didn't really like Theoden in the movie- he seemed so...I don't know, he kind of irritated me. Stubborn. But for no reason. Like he was jealous of Aragorn.
I did really like his character in the book though, I think the difference is HUGE - but maybe that's just me...

That's what I think, Sinbearer, but I can't help but get angry when they had that opportunity to do something right and they purposely changed it in order to modernize it.

I agree with you. Theoden is a verry good king in the books.
yesterday I watched the films, and I thought: this is not how he should be, its like Denethor. and there is a verry big difference between Denethor and Theoden.
but the scene 'symblelinne' (dont know how to write it ) is very good, I think....
the biggest fault was: don't greeting Haldir. without him he wouldn't win that war. and Haldir died there... for him and his people!!!!

I remember watching Theoden's face when I was watching TTT the other day, and I always imagined his reaction one of sheer surprise a sort of "what the fu...?" Because earlier he was feeling his country was so alone. When he was talking with Aragorn when he was telling Theoden to send out riders to call for aid and he said the line "Who will come? Men? Dwarves? Wizard? No, my lord Aragorn, we are alone" I believe, personally, that he was too completely floored to speak. (speaking purely from a film perspective)

^ Yes, Theoden's powers of beardliness is great, indeed.

I will now be the odd one in the crowd by saying that I actually preferred Theoden in the movies to Theoden in the books. In the books, he seemed perfectly willing to do the right, wise thing in every situation. He never had any thoughts of revenge and was never even slightly bitter towards the people who had practically enslaved him (Grima). Those are very nice characteristics, but I think that the movie portrays him in a slightly more emotional and human way, which I will always prefer over a definite "good guy" who is never lost or a little bit unstable.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
