I'm not quite finished with His Northern Lights/The Golden Compass/Book 1 but I really like the idea of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Crag playing the two main adults.
I'm going to put this in dark blue as to avoid spoileries.
Mainly because Lyra is blonde. In the books, they describe both Mrs. Coulter & Lord Asriel as having black hair.
Black + Black does not equal Blonde. And I highly doubt they'd want to get into the discussion of possible recessive allele, so the casting of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig's brilliant.
I've seen Nicole Kidman be a possible villainous character, and she is absolutely superb for this role. And I mean, it's Daniel Craig. <3

To be honest I've always imagined Mrs Coulter's hair to be blonde. I've read the books at least 4 times now and I've never noticed him saying that her hair's black.. though I'm sure its there.
I read that Philip Pullman always pictured Mrs Coulter as like Nicole Kidman. I think he wrote her a letter begging her to be in the film. I do think she looks perfect, just as I imagined her, complete with blonde hair

Seems odd that Phillip Pullman would write to Nicole Kidman asking her to be Mrs. Coulter if he wrote that Mrs. Coulter had black hair.
Ah well.
I'm not complaining.

Well if it bothers you so much, Elegost. Maybe it's for the best. I honestly had a problem with HP - PoA that I almost didn't see it but I did ended up doing it, and half of the stuff I didn't like. So I understand what you mean.
I actually saw Eragon before reading the book and even the movie bothered me afterwards.

So for the trailer, New Line is doing it, and they started by saying "In 2001, New Line Cinema brought you the Lord of the Rings. " And there was a falling Ring. I freaked out, thinking they were making the Hobbit or something. Then it turned into a compass, and i sort of stopped watching...
I did the same thing...I went to see another movie with my Lotr friend, and when we saw that trailer..at the exact same time we looked at eachother. I don't even think they mentioned Lord of the Rings....
I cannot wait for this movie. I really want to see it. Not only is Garry Pullman a genius, but I am a big fan of flashy CGI and polar bears.

^LOL! I did the same thing! I was freaking out, "What?! No! Why didn't I hear about Hobbit stuff? Wh----wait, what?"
xD

I think they are a disgrace to even mention LOTR in their trailer considering how they have treated PJ and the rest of the cast and crew. All they did was front the money, the real magic was made by people who worked long and hard to make films that so many people enjoy.
If it wasn't for the fact The Golden Compass looks so good, I wouldn't go an watch it on principal as it is a New Line production, and I would wish another flop on their already long list of flops.
[has just watched FOTR, hence the *uncharacteristic* rant]

Well New Line was basically PJ and Co last option and if they hadn't signed them, who would? So, I think they made some good decisions but again, it's movie politics, one that I have no experience with so I can't fault them for anything.

Ok, I know the movie doesn't open until Friday, but I got tickets to an advance screening at a local theatre. My review:
I first read the book eight years ago, so for eight years I have been building this film up in my mind. It was nearly perfect.
Lyra: I was kinda 'eh' about Dakota Blue Richards at first, but she pulled it off wonderfully.
Pan: Freddie Highmore was the perfect casting choice for his voice. I had always pictured him with a much more adult voice, but Freddie's really meshes with the character design. He was INSANELY adorable and amazingly animated.
Iorek: I didn't know Ian McKellen was voicing him until his first line. And he was perfect. I was unsure if they'd be able to pull him off, but the animation was FANTASTIC and coupled with Ian's awesome voice... He was definitely my favorite character.
Mrs. Coulter: Alright, I'd never seen a Nicole Kidman film before tonight, and I was terrified that she wouldn't be evil enough to pull it off. Oh, she was. I wanted to rip her face off from the time she walked onto the screen she was so slimy. *Shudders* Perfect. I can't wait to see her in the other two films.
Lord Asriel: Come on, it's Daniel Craig. Do I even need to say that he was awesome? I loved him.
Lee Scoresby: My mother has been drooling ever since she heard that Sam Elliot (A man she loves more than her husband) was cast in the role. Initially, his accent feels a bit over-the-top, but by the end of the movie I was loving him.
The special effects we wonderful, as was the acting. There was only one major deviation that I noticed, but the scenes were not changed but moved to the next movie.
Ok, I suck at movie reviews. It was great! Go see it!

No, it was perfect, and it looks like you've confirmed all our hopes for the film.
My hopes was definitely for Nicole Kidman to play a villainous character, isn't she fabulous?

I'm really glad you liked it. I'd been getting depressed about all the bad reviews I've been reading.
Anyone else seen it yet?

Same. I'm very anxious for the film. Will see it in theaters hopefully. I didn't like how the story was written in the book, so hopefully those kinks will be worked out on the big screen.
